most likely a gear inside the motor sheared it's teeth and thus doesn't retract the sunroof anymore.

just don't run it on empty all the time and you should be fine. when you let your tank get down there, it strains your fuel pump and makes it work harder.

8 years is a long time. was it sitting outside or garaged? that will make the biggest difference.
but some things to look at would be all the rubber, hoses, seals etc. check for cracks and brittleness...

some things you could change or at least take a look at while you're at it:
