I fit JL 8w0's in the front of a '95 convertible. Required a bit of modification for the brackets, but definitely fit depth-wise. Great bump; would have helped if it was dynamatted.

Part of the reason for that is airbags (especially in newer cars) are designed to work with the seatbelt system, so a seatbelt may not adequately restrain you without an airbag.
