Thats what I mean, if it were the valves, then wouldn't it be knocking all the time & not just in 3rd/4th?

If it keeps knocking, why don't you just open the door and say, "Hello!"
On a more serious note - its a little fishy that the knock only occurs in 3rd & 4th gears... nothing at all in the lower gears?...
