Sounds like the infamous rubber bushes on the gear linkage to me - cheap and easy fix - you can get metal ones on ebay that make the shift slightly clunkier but don't fall appart every 10-15 years

£1.20 a litre so basically $9 per us gallon
It is 99 octane though
Unfortunately we pay lots of tax on fuel in the UK
