The shifter assembly has 2 plugs running to it from the ECU (I'd imagine their part of the trans harness).
The smaller one is for the OD (towards the front on the driver side of the shifter assembly)

Its not that the 5s doesn't have enough power, its the fact that (like any other car) it has a rev limit, hit that and its game. The 3s will hit 135ish on the S54 ...

Open up your dizzy, and check your pickup. It might have gone bad. I know when mine did my symptoms were:
-Starting issues
-Rough idle
-Misfire
-Occasional dead cylinder
-Bogging down after 3k
-Boggin...
