at that point id get a 94 harness and ecu and go from there... sounds like whoever did the swap really REALLY screwed the wiring

IIRC the mr2 has the same sweep as the camry rpm gauge
so 1 o'clock is ~5,000 rpm on both the mr2 and camry...
but the 1 o'clock position is ~7,000 rpm on the celica face

i wouldnt imagine gas is the issue. i use shell almost exclusively.
clean the throttle body/IACV. then id try the coolant temp sensor if that doesnt work

you can drop a quart of ATF in there. it'll clean up the sludge slowly ehough to not break off chunks.. turned insides of my engine from nasty brown to dark amber after a few oil change cycles
