You are correct about the FP relay and resistor.
The FP sees 12v at start up, then switches over to 9v through the resistor. IIRC at more than 25% throttle at switches over to full 12v.

There are many things you need to make this happen.
Step one would be using a 3s from a celica, not an MR2 (It's easier) and a GT or e153 tranny

Cost is the main factor.
Even with the MR2 guys, there aren't many.
Stef and I have done 3 2gr swaps in MR2s, they are not cheap but hella fun to drive.
