most likely smelling either shorted wires burning or just wires burning. if u smelt it but never saw it, it's most likely a electrical connection for ur ignition, that should be the first place u look...

well... i tore the turbo out tonight
- no shaft play
-compressor wheel looked great.
-couldnt get off the turbine wheel side ... wonder why
-no oil on the intake side... thats good.
