Try connecting the illumination to the 12v directlyand see if it works. It's possible the illumination voltage isn't high enough because of the dimmer switch.

The reason it usually sounds worse is because the stock amp is optimized for the stock headunit. Trying to use an aftermarket headunit usually overdrives the stock amp causing it to clip and distort.
