You need a positive lead directly to the starter. The starter grounds itself through the tranny, so make sure there is a good ground lead onto the tranny

The oilfilter on a st205 is not mounted on the oilpan, but on the shortblock. So putting on a 3rd gen oilpan on your st185 engine wouldn't make much of a difference.
