got everything done this weekend. it was a pita getting the splines lined up (trans to engine), but it finally went.

i don't know how to lower the tranny safely.
axle shafts came out no problem
all the linkages and wires are disconnected.

new flywheel only a few bucks more than resurfacing:

flywheel bolts are on their way. if everything goes well, i might even be able to get it all done...

so the oil leak seems to have been drain-plug-related. no more leaks.
