I just got a new muffler yesterday. One of those huge N1 stlye stainless mufflers that makes a lot of noise. I like it a lot, but i noticed once i got home that it appeared to be smoking, like cars do when theyre burning oil and there was some oily residue in the muffler. I checked for it today at school and the smoking has stopped. Is this normal for new mufflers or should I check into it more?
Also should i take off my catalytic converter? How much louder will that make it? I have heard of ppl doing this but i dont know if its a good idea or not.

what color is the smoke? if it is blue you have problems... if not its probably just condensate in the piping, its stuff that is usually there, but you dont notice because your stock muffler isnt as free flowing, and because the new one is so clean, its more previlant.

I really dont know about the muffler. I know all of them smoke a little when you first start them. The oil residue could just be the moisture in the muffler, most drip a little after awhile. As for your cat converter, you can take it off. It'll increase flow alot, make no more noise, and get your a'ss slammed if the cops find out. Its really not a great idea to have a fatpipe and no cat. Cause if you ever get pulled over for loud exhaust, they check the pipe and see the cat missing. If you put on a fatpipe with a silencer then you'll be fine. And to fully answer your question, removing the cat doesn't increase sound, but if you remove the resonators (the mini-mufflers) it will. Thus the term straight pipe.
it may be burning chemicals on or in the exhaust, its pretty normal.
If it continues, then u have an issue. Give it a good week or so.

OK. Thanx for the help guys. U saved me a lot of worrying. The smoke isnt blue, so I think its fine, but i'll keep an eye on it for a little while anyway.
when i got new exhaust on my rx-7 the smell and smoke lasted for over a month....
