reaching the 160hp mark - 6G Celicas Forums

I have a 95 GT HB and I need more hp, I have a zex flywheel and CM clutch allready installed and that helps my acceleration and stuff, but I want more horse power and I read on one of the how-to's or intros that the 150 - 160 mark was easily obtainable. What parts do you guys suggest buying to reach it? BTW I only have $500 in the bank right now, but Graduation is comming up so I will have around 700 - 800 to spend.

160 whp in a gt? your talking about having 188 hp at the crank PLUS. Prolly gonna have to go turbo I'd think to achieve that. NA w/ the 5sfe is gonna be quite a job, i'd think you'd be better off going turbo and just getting a little more power. In the long run I'm afraid i'd have to say go 3sgte. So much better in a lot of ways.

Just need a Intercooler then, and call it a day (in a day) you dont have to wait 1-2 months while Kletus and Jeb over there at the shop try to figure out how to wire the whole mess and then later call you up and ask what JDM means.

$500-800 is not a lot, however you should consider...
Cold Air Induction kit and Cat Back Exhaust system for starters.
Thereafter, Header, Hi-flow Cat, Underdrive pulley, regrind Camshafts, head ported and polished, FPR, S-AFC, ....

its a stroker kit for the 5fse. sounds like a great kit for what it all comes with and much MUCH MUCH more reliable then a bolt on turbo! plus no spooling up and turbo lag!

NOT TRUE AT ALL! The 5sfe is a great motor with great posibilities and plenty of potential. If you go and strap any old turbo kit on there from junk yard kits your going to have many many problems stuch as BLOWING YOUR ENGINE UP! Im all for the N/A 5sfe. it can be done and done right if you get the right stuff. plus yoru not going to be leaking oil or breaking down every so often with a bolt on turbo.

160-170 hp? that kit stated 155- and what ELSE could u do to your 5sfe on top of that?
What you guys don't seem to understand is that building a motor doesn't yeild specific numbers. You can't say it'll make 155 hp or 160-170 just because it's modified with specific parts. With internals mods as listed from that performance re-build kit/prepped block... there will be a significant amount of tuning required to make full use of the power potential. I'll tell you this now... you won't get any exactly numbers... and those listed from the manufactures are usually exaggerated. Specifically speaking... that performance block is really good. It has slightly increased displacement and compression, which increase horsepower and torque, and strengthed rods, which further increases overall potential... however, that won't mean anything if the head isn't prepped to match, or if the tuning is poor. FYI... 160 bhp is EASY to make with a 5SFE. 500-600 dollar webcam regrinds will basically put you there or around there. With that prepped block, a built head (flowbench port and polish, 3/5 angled valve job), the 5SFE can probably lay down as much as 170-180 bhp well tuned on stock fuel system/ECU. Beyond that... the 5SFE injectors may need to be upgraded... cause they max out pretty quick. FOr even more power... upgraded valve springs, tuned ECU, more agressive cams, higher revolutions, all add up to more power. From there on out... it's all about streetability, and flow capability and cam tuning limitations of the FE head.

The price for the mods I've listed...
P&P head with 3/5 angled valve job ~500-600 dollars (for an assembled head)
Webcam regrinds, or custom Camshaft regrinds ~400-500 dollars (go custom for more agressive lift/duration)
Prepped block from that site 1399

With that alone, it should be a good set-up... and with bolt-on modifications (intake/header/exhaust/UD pulley) can yield around 160-170 bhp if not more. Proper tuning can free up as much as an additional 10 hp on the stock fuel system and ECU... beyond that... you're pushing the stock limits.

Beyond stock limits:
Do same mods as above, with custom ground camshafts and upgraded valve springs. Go at least 280 duration. Above 8mm lift... you'll probably need to modify the valvetrain set-up. Anyways... a set-up like this with upgraded fuel/ignition system, with custom ECU... can yeild even more power.

An important note: With more agressive cams, you shift the powerband UP. There will be a large loss of low-end torque asociated with building an n/a set-up... depending on how much you want... and how far you're willing to go. GOing beyond stock limits will make the motor less streetable... meaning it won't idle below 1500 rpms... won't have any torque below 4000 rpms... and basically won't drive too well in the lower rpms. It's hard to have the best of both words in terms of small displacement motors... with a lot of torque, means limited rpms and less overall power (stroker motors)... with more power, means less overall torque and a lot more high-end power (revving motors). Take your pick. Toyota basically tuned the stock motor to fit in the middle as best they can...
