Intake for 3sgte - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #12315 14 posts Started by jgreening
I have read that aftermarket intakes for turbos do not result in significant performance gains like in n/a cars. I have also read that they can significantly increase noise which I do not want. Please let me know what differences I can expect with an aftermarket intake on the 3sgte. Thanks for the replies.

Well the truth is you do want the turbo to have as much free flowing air as possible. By adding an intake it removes the "restrictive" stock air box.

Also, you would only need a "Ram" type, and not a cold air intake type, because even if cold air gos into the turbo it will come out hot, thats what your intercooler is for.
don't spend your money on it.

It's not worth it.
Did you do your swap or are you going to do ur swap. Your info suggests that u've already done the swap. So my question is, how are u using a stock 3s airbox? It will not fit properly in your engine bay even if you did relocate the battery. Your going to need a custom set up anyways so you basically have no choice but to get an intake. Its not something thats going to get your any real performance its simply a base in which you will build up from. Turbos suck in air at a much greater force than any n/a so the less the turbo has to work to get the air it needs the better.

My listed info is what I am doing. All parts are purchased except wheels which are being ordered this week. Car will be going to the mechanic at the end of June. Thanks for the info. I had no idea the stock air box would not fit.

Any recommendations on intakes? Super, I see your profile says "custom" what did you do?

custom is the way 2 go my friend:

70-80mm reducer hose (used as expander!) connected 2 turbo
custom 80mm metal tubing with 2x 16mm tubes welded onto it
some 80mm hose
80mm inlet filter (dry paper type) 140mm accross 250mm long

or if u want of the shelf get the apexi
btw you said you dont want your car 2 be louder, but your stock recirc dump valve will be loud like an atmospheric

UZ is lucky, he doesnt have an AFM. With the ST185 theres a big ol annoying AFM, it greatly reduces ur options. I took my 5sfe intake tubing, and cut it to fit. And then i put on a K&N filter.

Also, the St185 engine doesnt have a stock recirc. valve. The intake will make you hear the turbo spool tho, but thats cool.

The intake might be much simpler, but that swap isnt.

You could also get the AFM deletion Kit from bulletproofautomotive.com and you wouldnt have to use the AFM at all.

Of course you need to send them the ECU, and wait about 10 weeks...
if u do that mine as well get a stand alone with MAP and then u'll get a lot more power capabilities.
