I used to own a '95 GT automatic and it ran way lower RPM's to get the same speed as my '99 GT Manual. Anybody else at 4000RPM's at 80 miles an hour? Could there be something wrong with my tranny or is it just in the gearing?
-Negative
By the way my '99 manual is way faster than my old sluggish automatic which was the whole point in selling my '95.
i'm around 3200-3400 rpm's at 80 mph. btw auto tranny
former celica owner.
That's more than I remember. Maybe hindsights not so great. Anybody else got any numbers?
In my auto at 80 I'm usually around 3000 or so.. to hold at 95 or + I'm at 3600

Negative with my gt manual, I get the same RPM numbers. I don't like it! It's the only thing i dislike about the celica. It feels kinda unstable and not secure at those speeds wen its at 4000 rpm going 80 mph.
its just the normal gearing of the celica.
since the engine is not that powerfull, it is geared higher so that you still have some pull at highway speeds.

macavely- I completely agree with you. The only reason I bought my '95 auto was because it was the only one that was in good shape and available in Houston when I finally laid my '86 GTS (w/3S-GTE swap) to rest. I ended up buying my '99 GT in New Orleans.
back to subject:
If all these numbers are true - what does that make the stock top speed at say red line?
Auto: I remember at least 125MPH but don't remember at what RPM
GT: I will find out on the way to Austin (car show) this weekend hopefully.
Does anyone have any info on top speeds?
I think the top speed is about 115-120. There is a limiter preventing you from goin higher. However i have heard of people getting rid of the speed limiter. I have personally never gone over 115. I have a 97 ST manual by the way
in my st manual @ 80mph 4krpm
and speed limit kicks in @117 If I remember correctly ?

I will return one day.
I take it the automatic is not equipped with the rev limiter or if so it is set higher.
My '95 auto did 125MPH on the way back from Austin one several occassions for most of the 1.75 hour trip - no problem. Don't know what the rev's were though.
I didn't think that any foreign made cars in the 90's has limiters. Ive had two different 6gc gt. one manuel and one auto both can hit 125, i know for fact. maby the limiter thing is an st thing.
My GT Manual goes 80 at 4k. I hate how short the damn tranny is geared it doesn't let me go as fast as I want in any of the gears. Does anyone make a tranny that goes longer in each gear? Or is it just the curse of the 6th gen celica?
I had the same experience when i did the auto to manual swap. Suddenly i was +1000 rpm at every speed, i thought something was broken too, but from what i hear this is normal with manual. the gearings are different. By now ive gotten use to it. Yes, im at 4k at 80, but as i see it now, there is still 2500 more rpm to go...
Its Orville's Celica, i just drive it...
Ok, I tested al this data as best I could after the Austin Tx. Car show this weekend. There does not appear to be a rev limiter in my '99 GT I got to around 120MPH at around 5250RPM. As for stability - I felt stable as hell and my friend in his MKIII Supra backed off before I did. I was still pulling on him at 115MPH (his Supra is n/a of course). Traffick did not permit any higher speeds but we made the trip from Austin to San Antonio in record time! We buzzed a very pissed off Porche 911 (approx. '90 model), a Z3 roadster and blew the doors off some riced out civics who by the way cannot touch a Toyota when we are already at high speeds (is this called 'top end' right).
Anybody from this sight who is ever in the Eastern Texas area I am extending an open invitation to race this very scenic run. There are absolutely no cops and nothing but high quality smooth roads at 3 lanes each way - Perfect!
Wish I had gotten pictures though.
yeah I got a manual and sometimes I really wish I had a sixth gear to drop the rpm at cruising speed..
as long as my engine doesnt blow from going 4k at 80mph ever im happy.
All civics have a limiter at 105- if you get a chance, it's VERY fun to drive the civics speed, and slowly accerlate to that speed so he's still next to you, then blow past it and watch his engine suddenly cut and he slows down to 90. Slow down again, do it again and again!
Its, sad, but I did this to a 7gc that was really pissing me off. they're limited at the same speed.
That's f**king hilarious. I'm definetly going to have to try that. So the GT doesn't have the rev limiter then?
Pretty sure not as a manual either - unless it's specific to 5th gear only or a certain speed that is in excess of 120MPH or 5250RPM.
I have a 94' ST and my rev limiter shuts me down at 115. And same here on the RPM's. It bothers me too. Im cruising down the interstate at like 85 and my rpms are at like 4000. I think it would provide for ****ty gas mileage. If those rpm's would go down the gas mileage would be phenomenal. And plus it feels like im running my car to death after the 1st fifty miles.
We need a 6th gear.
Has anyone successfully mated a 6-speed to either the 5S-FE or the 7A-FE?
Supposidely it's not a matter of difficulty as just expensive, and not much of a gain.
