Im not too good with car audio....all i have is a alpine deck that ive had for about 3 years....and i want a little better sounding system.. I dont wanna do any subs but possibly an amp but i dont know...ive read the crazy debates about the 6.5 or 6.75 sizes of our front speakers so im just gonna go with 6.5s ... As far as brands go i was thinkin alpine or infinity. But i dont know what's the best. I want something that hits well and clear...a nice crisp thump, what do i have to do? can i get any suggestions...after all i trust the 6gc owner the most >>
Im lookin to spend up to 400 or 500 bucks

honestly go with jls... they have some 6.5s that i have seen between 120 and 150 and they sound perfect... i went to tweeter and they sounded better than more expensive boston acoustics... jl has superb quality. and those can take the power u give em..

If you change out your stock speakers, you'll lose a LOT of bass. JLs have pretty decent bass (alpines and Infinities do not.. they're not bad, just not bassy), but you'll still be like: WTF, where did it go?!

With $4-500, you could get some really nice components or coaxials from Adire, CDT, Focal, Eclipse, JL, etc. Personally, I'd get some CDT CL-61a components from TheZeb and a good amp to power them. I've got a JBL P180.2 that puts out around 100 watts RMS per channel at four ohms...you could find this amp new on eBay for around $150 shipped and it's a good amp. Include another $35 or so for wiring for the amp and speakers and you'd be right around $350, and you'd have a really good sounding front stage. Then you could spend that extra money on sound deadening for those doors, because they will rattle without it.

what happens if i dont go with an amp...are the cdt's still a great choice or does that even matter?

Without an amp, those speakers will only be getting approximately 15-23 watts most likely, rather than 100 or so(if you go with the P180.2.) So the speakers will probably sound very quiet compared to the stock speakers, and won't sound as good as they would off of an amp.

For a couple days a week or so ago I was running my Pioneer REV coaxials off of deck power and not only did they sound poor, but they also didn't get loud. I hooked them up to my Profile CA200 amp and now they sound so much better, and get much louder. >>

If you don't want to get an amp, then you're probably better off buying some cheaper speakers that aren't made to handle too much power.

I dont want to go over the top here either...that sounds like a really good set up but if my doors are going to be completely rattling...i dont know if i need that much power...are most speakers going to rattle the doors?

Most speakers will rattle your doors...my stock ones rattled my doors even. I bet that if you crank your music up and close the doors with the windows up and stand outside the car your doors will rattle too. >>

Mine no longer rattle, because I've used a lot of RaamMat Dynamat-type sound deadener, and about 4-5 layers of eDead v.3 paint-on sound deadener. The eDead stuff is so easy to apply, and it's fairly cheap too. My gallon was $55 shipped I believe. >>

So for around $400, you could have an awesome front speaker setup with no rattles and not too much work. >>

And if you go without the amp, then you could get some cheaper coaxial speakers that handle around 25-35 watts RMS. Those would probably be a good choice to run off of deck power, but I don't know of any speakers that really fit that criteria off the top of my head.

I agree with coomer, I had CL-61's in my car for about 6 months, they sounded great, but they do not have bass. I just recently upgraded but they are definately worth the money.

I had the soft dome. I upgraded to EF-61CF's w/ 1" silk dome tweeter upgrade & satnet 560 crossover upgrade's.

jls, decent amp, dynamat = 350 shipped, not a bad price, the jls i heard were kinda bassy, but u could just always put the bass on ur deck to +5, those speakers will take ne thing u throw at them... does ur deck have bass engine, mine does and that pounds the speakers and u get good bass out of that

i think thats what im gonnna do...that setup sounds pretty sweet....i just always pictured myself getting something alpine cuz i know they are super dependable but jls should do the job....i gotta blast my linkin park in style >>

i choose alpine for head units and if i was gonna get monitors, and jls for speakers. amps from what iv heard it doesnt really matter... my friend is using a 50 dollar amp it its fine... so far has lasted him like 3 years.

my friends legacy pounds and it was a very cheap amp. for speakers i wouldent care what i got, for subwoofers i would need something nice with alot of power.

dude JLs are way to expensive. here are few companies that are more economical and just as good or better.

Crystal mobile sound(better than JL)
Focal
CDT(consistantly rate one the best speaks in the world)
Alpine
Infinity
Rainbow(very expensive but are the best)


JL is over priced I dont like them

Thanks for the advice...looks like im going with the CDT now thanks to coomer...but i am still torn cuz i wanna get some from a local dealer like an alpine or infinity set...but im still deciding but thank you for the more options >>

I ended up going with some new alpines(for the rear) $180 down to $90 cuz i had some hook ups.. and my friend is givin me his mb quart component set for free so i made out pretty good...ill probably use the extra money to buy a new deck. I also decided not to go with the amp...too much work...but hopefully it will sound a lot better
