I started taking off my axles today because my CVs were busted. I got the passenger side off fine, but im having some trouble with the divers side. Does the axle just come out, or am i missing something? Ive tried prying it out with no luck. The axle came apart and this is what i have left to pull out.


Another question is does out tranny have a drain bolt? Alot of fluid came out and i want to replace the gear oil.

put your car in nuetual and have the other front wheel off the ground.. then pry it out.. MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE AXLE SEAL. the thing that seals the gear oil in the tranny where the axle goes in..

that pic is what ive been dealing with for the past week.

on the tranny there are 2 large bolts...one is for drain and one is for fill. undo them and drain your tranny oil out.

then get some type of thick pry bar and keep prying on it from all sides till it pops out. ....it may take a few min before it comes out.

if you end up having to buy rebuild axels, dont buy them from any place that sells rebuilds by CCT... ive had nothing but horrible luck with them. i had them orderd 3 times and none of them were right.

Looks like you pulled the axle apart... in a sense... mostly broken. It'll be most cost effect now to just replace it. Also, there is a drain bolt on the tranny... I believe it's on the side... I can't remember exactly where.

after getting 3 messed up axels from autozone (aka CCt axels). i ended up getting a rebuild through Carquest. i highly recomend them...the axel looks better then my oem one. i didnt drive the car yet, but i doubt that this axel will give me any problems.

Well i already baught axles before i started this project, and guess who they were rebuilt by?
I got the old axle out, and im assuming the new one just goes back in the same way... is that assumption correct? I have givin it everything i can but it just wont go. Any suggestions?
And yah the drain and fill plugs are the big 15/16 inch bolts sittin there on the tranny.

try using a old fasioned lug wrench as a pry bar, thats what the toyo manual shows, worked perfectly for me, after i tried with just about everything else laying around the garage!! lol >>

That helped when i was taking it out, but theres really nothing to brace it against when trying to get it back in. its that damn ring at the end that has to snap into place inside the tranny. ahh this is killin me and i need my car back...

EDIT- lagos, did you order the axles and they sent you the wrong ones? or did you put them in only to have them fail on you?

take a block of wood, like a 2x4 and put it against the axel hub and then knock it with a hammer. thats how i put mine in when i did my transmission swap. make sure you lube up the gearing threads on the axels before you put them in.

Alright thanks for all the help guys, i got it in and it seems to be ok. no more clicking noises at least. That job was such a pain (even worse than replacing the headgasket on my old car) but im glad i got it over with and i just hope everything holds together haha.
