recently my car has started making a strange clunking sound. this started after I put it up on jackstands to replace some of the screws in the plastic splashguard. now I don't understand how this could start a problem such as this but I thought I would mention it anyway.

okay so the problem is as follows:

starting up the car when I put the clutch in and turn the key it makes a loud clunk. when I accelerate suddenly, either when changing gears or just stab at the throttle this same clunk can be heard. the sound does not happen when the car is not in gear and happens in any rpm. my friend commented that it sounds like something is hitting the firewall, yes it almost sounds like that and can be quite loud if I jerk the throttle back and forth a couple times.

whoever tells me whats going on gets a cookie

thanks.

Well i figure the engine shakes alot when you first start it up, and if you dont have good mounts its going to shake alot hitting any lilttle bump.

Im just throwing out ideas.

clunk almost always = bad axeles

how do we go about checking for "bad" axels?

The same way you go checking for bad axis powers. nyuk nyuk nyuk

get under your car a look at the axel boots. see if the boot has any rips in it, or of you see that any of the grease is starting to leak out of it. also grab the axel arm, and push and pull on it. if it feels like its moving around too much, then thats probably the bad one.

had this in a previous car i had, clunked like that, found out what it was when the clutch pedal suddely went flat to the floor and heard lots of grinding, gearbox mounting ripped itself away from the box and left a hole in the top of the gearbox and the engine hanging down at one end. It was a loose gearbox mounting.

Probably not the same thing but it reminded me a lot of that. Just get it checked at Toyota dealer, it wont cost you anything for them to look, putting it on a lift or better, over a pit would help cause you could make it clunk while theyre underneith.
