I took my car in for its 60k mile maintenance. I told the mechanic sometimes my car doesn't start. I turn the key and it hits 1000rpms than dies. Sometimes now it doesn't even turn. The thing is, it only has happened three times in the last two months. What could it be? He was not very helpful. He replaced my four year old battery and said that was the problem but then my car had trouble starting yesterday. I have to hold down the gas for a full minute to get the engine to stay on. Have any of you guys had similar problems or know what it could be?
Is it the ignition or starter? By the way, everything else electric worked, so I was skeptical when he said it was my battery. >>

My friend was at work last night and he started his tiburon and he put it in neutral...and revved the engine to the floor and it wouldn't go higher than 3000 rpms..real fricken weird...maybe his intake was clogged.

either way that is strange and i got no clue, let me know what happens..

OOk, you need fuel treatment. Does it only do that when it's cold, or does it do it all the time?

Also, I would thing the Tiburon has a cold rev limiter on it. My vette wouldn't get over three untill hte engine was 200 deg.

yea dude my auto tranny doesn't shift for a while until it gets warm either.

it stays in third gear. i am at like 4 grand on the RPM's on the interstate. i have to go to like 5 to keep up with other cars. somebody said that it does that to protect your drivetrain. i don't see how it protects your drivetrain by letting it rev up to (6 the farthest i have went). that sounds like it is putting more wear on the drivetrain. right?

Sounds like a plan by toyota to screwin you over into buying a new engine cause you blew up the old one from such hi revs.

Could it be the automatic choke?

Mine does the same thing. It usually takes about 2 mins till it shifts into overdirve.

The trans. computer is letting the fluid warm up to the proper operating temp. The fluid which is much thicker when it is cold dosen't make it through the smaller passages inside the trans very well keeping the operating pressure lower than it should be. So by reving faster it keeps the pressure up where it should be.

Take it for a diagnostic, it could be a vacuum leak, or if you have an electrical problem with the charging and ignition system then it could set codes in the computer. Either way a diagnostic should narrow it down a bit

Ay, I think, I ran into the same problem as you once. So here what I did:
I tried resetting my ECU, so, I unplugged the car battery. Unplugging the wires from the car better will activate your security system, which will disable your car's ignition and your car will not start. I went to my dad's friend's auto shop and he told me to do this (below) and it worked! I tried everything!! Hope this helps

Here's how I got my ignition to start working:
Step 1: unplug the wires from the car battery
Step 2: insert your key into the ignition and turn it all the way
Step 3: Put the wires back

Yea man, how did the ECU reset effect your car?

I have to hold down the gas for a minute to get my car to run. This has only happened three times in the last three months and it has been a little cold out. If I don't hold the gas down than it hits 1000rpms then dies on me. what's the deal?

If you have to hold down the gas, then that means that your throttle isn't being opened enough to keep it idleing.

i get the same thing....every morning i turn the key and hold down the gas for 20 seconds...otherwise itd die on me....i can live with that...but i plan on getting an ignition system and hopefully thatll make it go away...and also add some hp to the car
