Boosted convertable?? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #16267 19 posts Started by hs2g
I heard from a topic about a month ago that a boosted convertable is not a very good idea because the frame is weak and can't handle the extra torque say around 8PSI. Is this true? Before I start saving for a turbo/supercharger kit, I just want to know will a convertable hold up to the extra power? If it won't then i'll just go show with some simple bolt ons.
Its an unknown. But you may want to ask again in a week. >biggrin.gif> Here is a good thread where it was discussed:

Chassis Flex Post

If the convertables are bad for boost, then how come some s2000's are running on vortech superchargers and 12+psi boosted? aren't all convertables the same?
No. Convertibles like the Vette and the S2000 were designed to handle the horsepower - that is, they were designed as convertibles. Our cars were once coupes that got the tops cut off in California by a company called American Sunroof Company (ASC). The roof in a standard car provides much of its ridgity - when you cut it off, the ridgity is lessened significantly. ASC did provide some structural enhancements but they were all rear of the lock pillar. The flex is going to occur in the front cowl.

It should be ok; your car isn't going to snap in half. I'd start doing chassis bracing tho; DG sells some stuff.
you cant compare a sports car like a s2k or 350z vert to a celica. they are made different each vert frame is ment for a purpose in which case the celica is ment for around 125 hp.

hows it taste motha f*cka
is there anyone on this forum with a boosted convertable? I want to know how it is working for them and what did they have to mod or fix any problems they had.
Gosh... you guys really are pretty paranoid. If the Celica vert can't handle boost... then it shouldn't even be on the road. The chassi is NOT gonna flex outta control or anything like that, if that's what you're reffering to. Sure, it flexes a bit more compared to a Hatch or a Coupe, but it's nothing that will somehow make the car dangerously unstable because of the added torque/power of boost...

And... DG Performance has a 3SGTE vert I believe...

No one said it was going to be dangerous. The question is will it lose ridgity over time. For my sake, I hope you are right Kwanza and there will be no problems.

Jgreening, and everyone else thanks for all the inputs and advice.

Jgreening let me know how you like the boosted convertable and how it feels when u have it. Thanks in advance.
There should not be a problem. Any car that is made as a vert should be able to handle any good amount of power... There body is made dif then norm. and should, Is I would say at least handle around 300hp
wow if you say they can handle around 300HP then i guess i don't have anything to worry about. I'm only planning on running around 8-10 PSI which I think would be around 200-220 HP.

people the vert have reinforced frames.. which means they are a lot stronger then coupes and hatches...so go boost away.. and if your still scared.. drop in a roll cage and engine dampners.. and stronger motor mounts..
