downshifting problems - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #16433 12 posts Started by Akuza
ok when i try to downshift at high rpm it doesnt want to go in
like when im in second and i try to shift to first it wont let me in and i tried forcing it in but still no go i have to be like almost dead stop to shift or like 1k rpm in order to do that
and for higher gears its like 2k rpm
but for cars like hondas they go in all the time

think a mr2 tranny will fix this or no ?
Akuza this is not right at any car (Toyota,Honda,Subaru etc). The downshifting to 1st gear is very sensitive shifting and i`m wondering why you doing this, its better to clutch the 2nd and push the rpms higher than downshift to 1st or prefer to stop first and then to shift to 1st gear if you want to extend your gearbox`s life.

Shifting with Celicas isnt the best shifting but a quickshift and a daily driving aftermarket clutch improving this a lot.

Pretty dangerous to be shifting back into first...seeing as first gear is basically for launching...

A Jaws4God Creation...
Its supose to do that!!!, to keep you from over winding your engine, and busting up tons of stuff, its not a perfect system but its ment to not let you shift into that gear if the speed is to high. if you have to be at 1k to get into 1st then there is already damage to it. Why do you wana do that anyway, its not gana get you to accelerate faster it will only slow you down because the rev limit would already be passed for that gear. I hope its not for the sound
yea.. you are not suppose to shift it into first..

when i shift my old car from second to first going 5-10 mph it grinded like crazy...

i never downshift into first. i always come to a stop and or a slow rolling sttop and rev it up a little bit and put it in. dont try it, it is bad for your car. sometimes i do wish i COULD be able to downshift it from 2nd to 1st when i'm going 15-20mph, for racing purposes. but you cant. its like this for every manual ive ever driven.

You can do it but 1st gear revs up so quick that it'll be a waste of time. Only downshift to first when you slow down to a slow roll.
I used to do this when going thru the canyon roads of so cal (haripin 10 mph turns) its not really good for the car but if you really want to down shift into first just force it into gear. it wont be pretty but itll go in.
If im going like 30, ill downshift to 2nd when im coming up on a stoplight. then when the rpms get around 1500 or so i bump it in neutral and stop. In my old crx, shifting to first even at 5-10rpms it was jerky, its only meant for launching. I think thats why 2nd doesnt stall until almost 800rpm's or so
Old topic, but I have been noticing something like this on my car.. Before I sent the car in for a service at my Toyota dealer I could push it into first no matter what (if this is good or bad is kinda not the point, so no flaming!). After the car came back I can't go from 2nd or higher and down into 1st anymore. Without almost stopping completely. I was starting to get pissed because I was under the impression that they had messed something up at the service, but what they probably did was fix something.. >smile.gif> My old car didn't have this "problem", or rather feature I guess, to stop you from going down into 1st gear.

Atleast now I know that this is supposed to be like this. I usually downshift into 1st when I know that I'm going to have to stop completely so that the car is "ready to go" in 1st when I can start driving again. (green light, pedestrian have crossed or whatever). I suppose I should just put it in neutral then and go from neutral and into 1st when the light hits green.
