Why wasn't the 6th gen GT-Four ever imported into the United States?

the 5th gen alltrac didnt sell well at all...so they didnt bother trying to sell us the GT4.

emissions, yes, but mostly- cost. Not cost effective to sell a GT4 that would list close to 30 grand- RX7 territory in its day

yeah, but you know if they brought it back out, and then released it into the states, people would be buying them like there the best thing i the world.. cause they are..

I think maybe in the US automotive AWD sport car market, Toyota GT4 have too many competitors like Lancer EVO, WRX STI......and seriously this is what i don't like to say....GT4 can't even beat them........i mean in price and performance.....and the other way.....Supra is another reason......

quick thread hijak.... the coupes were never produced in japan... so are all the japanese people all like oooooh sexy celicas with the coupes? kinda like we are with the curren?
did 7th gen celicas come ever have a gt-four/all trac version available somewhere??
And honestly, i doubt it would take much for Toyota to produce something AWD/turbo again that would be capable of competing against EVOs and STIs...

you can all say its down to emissions/cost/sales...but just face it...a GT4 wasnt imported to the US because its just too special :-P
a car like the gt4 wouldnt sell at all in 94, just like the 5th gen only sold about 1,500 total.
but if they came out with something awd trubo today, and kept it around the wrx price point. then i think many more people would buy it. i wouldnt car if it was a scion or a toyota, its all the same thing.

but for sure everybody wants the special one, just like now, there is no GT4 in US market, so everyone wants it so bad, but if they sell it in US then.....nothing special anymore......just like the Skyline.....everyone wants it so bad too......so GT4 just like the legend celica in US......>

Dont forget about the market... more and more people were moving into the SUV market leaving little space for the performance market. The people in America did not seam that interested in performance (not us of course) but that is another reason why the import of high performance cars diminished.

exactly shid gets wut i ment, evo= 19psi stock( practically maxed outt) sti= 15psi if u put those standards in the gt4 it would kill.

I don't think the emmisions was an issue really (when looking at V8s and such that produce way more exhaust). I think it was really that there wasn't enough of a demand to have them shipped overseas.
But I'm sure v8s have a higher standard than I4s. and even I4 turbos. So maybe it was a problem...
cuz it has more hp than NA supra

if Rally racing was popular in the U.S then Toyota would of bought it over and it would of sold well.
im pretty sure Ricky is right. i read somewhere that back when the gt4 was released (mid to late 1990) , there was a high demand in SUVs and damned mini vans. people werent buying much sports cars anymore. cost and broke people were the cause. so naturally, no gt4 was brought here because it probably wouldnt even sell that well at that time. it wasnt only the celica either that was victimized, rx7 300zx supra amongst others were victims of the loss of interest in sports cars @ that particular time. all these legendary cars werent getting any attention. the enthusiasts were pretty much hybernating back then! who knows where the hell they went... >> but today is a different story. the car enthusiast is back for more..! i see em everyday riding in them evos, rsx's, & wrx's >> anyway if u look it up, you'll probably find it somewhere. there was an entire article about it. if ur doing ur report on the celica, u better get an A man! >>
