this is prob already posted at celica.net but im too lazy and it takes too long to load
...so whats the difference between premium and regular gas?
everyone ive talked to says that its just bs and theres no performance gain
what are your opinions?
our engiens aren't made for premium fuel so it's just a wast of money.

higher octane levels are only needed on engines with high compression ratio's or forced induction to reduce detonation and pinging. there is no benefit of using higher octane on a engine that doesn't specifically require it.
High octane burns cleaner.. thus your combustion is more powerful... therefor you go faster... you won't notice much with regular or premium... try running TURBO BLUE through your engine...WARNING>>> if you still have a caytalitic converter don't put more than half a tank of TURBO BLUE in your car, mix it with premium... newayz... TURBO BLUE is rated at 117octane.. you WILL feel a difference no matter what you have under your hood. Also running a cleaner gas will not mess with your 02 sensors as much so you will gain a little there.
The only prob with TURBO BLUE is the cost... Its about $4 a gallon where I am from

most of it is just myth... however dont just go getting the economy stuff, it isnt really the octane as much as some of the other components in the fuel that change the effect... the previous owner of my friends 93 probe used economy for 2 years, now theres sludge buildup in his gas tank, hasnt had time/money to get a new one, so he has to buy 2 bottles of fuel treatment just to keep that junk from clogging his injectors...
that turbo blue stuff just reminded me of what happens when you put jet fuel into a stock bike... hehe... kaBOOM.... however 117 octane isnt a HUGE increase, its about 3 more than then average octane booster (around 114...) so really no harm done...

if you use premium you can advance your timing a bit a get a couple extra ponies..i know its not much but its free and with our little peice of **** engines we need all that we can get. damn toyota..they have a line of killer engines and they stick the celica with a focking FE..marketting bastards (sorry i'm still a little sore, at least she handles like a dream)

LOL remindes me of a lawn mower my friends put together... it ran on pure alchol and had a really small custom made turbo on it... ran at 3lbs boost. this thing will do 40mph wheelies! funniest **** ever!!
by the way where the hell are you buying Octane boosters with 10pt gains???? those little bottles on the shelf are really nothing more than a cleaner... kind of like what your friend has to do with his probe. Turbo blue isn't gods gift to racing but you will feel a difference.... plus it smell really good! kinda like cotton candy....
also it won't mess with your engine but if you run it with a caytalitic converter it will gum it up and you will create a build up of exhaust and thats not good!

i got some stuff in my garage (never used it) that claims 114 octane... dont even remember where i got it.

I agree with what everyone is saying about it not doing too much, but there's one other thing. If your car is high mileage, it never hurts to put a tank of premium in every now and then, it just seems to help things out sometimes.
so many mixed opinions. the benifit of premium has already been expressed here, the major advantage of it is that it is a cleaner fuel. the regular fuel when put into an engine with a high compresion ratio or a boosted cylinder, will be more likely to detonate. the premium seems to be able to handle the compresion phase of the piston stroke a lot better without detonation. but that doesnt mean it wont happen. if you are running the wrong compresion ratio with to much boost it will still suffer detonation.
speaking from experience...in my 97 ST i ran premium gas...caused WAYYYYY too much carbon build up and deposits on the exhaust...and hurt my gas mileage too...I think it's a waste of money without advanced timing or a turbo
