HELP - Tranmission Issue? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #17644 4 posts Started by speedracer_2020
Hey guys.. while driving my Manual 1995 Celica GT, I shifted from 2nd to third today and heard this awful "kerplnk" sound ...

As if some sort of ring flew of or something.

Anyway, I've been trying to shift and I seem to easily be able to shift into 1st, 3rd and 5th. But 2, 4 and reverse.. they barely hold and fall out.

Weird eh?

Anyone have any logic to this? Please help. I Have NO reverse gear right now, and I'm short shifting! It's painful -- I'd like to be armed with some info when I go to the mechanic..

Thanks guys!!!

Shaun!
My car did this after I did my clutch. There are two little U-shaped clips that hold your shifter cables to the transmission, one of them has popped off I think its the one closest to the front of the car. Go to your dealership and buy a two new ones (replace both while your there). Its an easy fix. Just be glad cuz the last time that happened to me I found the clip logged inside of my rear right tire. Had to get an exchange on the tire (free) and a new clip... that day sucked.
Clips? I ordered the clips.. should be here in a couple days. I even got a print out of the diagram even! They are close to where cables go in.. (furthest away from the shift box - toward the front of the car)

BUT .. I'm a bit confused -- how do the clips make a difference. Should the cables still be connected and you should be able to shift still?

Just curious.. thanks!

The Clips hold the shift cables in place on the transmission. If you look closely at them you can see the little boot that goes around where the cable goes into the connector. If there is any slack there, there will be no shifting of any kind because the entire cable assembly is moving.
