Grinding in 3rd gear - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #1773 26 posts Started by skippy344
Hey Folks,

I just replaced my original clutch at 131K mi. I installed an Exedy Sportline clutch Kit. Resurfaced the Flywheel and used the same oil that the dealership uses.

Now, when cold, its hard to shift into 1st, and when shifting into 3rd, all the time, it grinds a little.

I did not grind before the clutch replacement, but the original clutch was slipping, so that 's why I replaced it.

Any ideas about why its hard to shift into 1st and grinds into 3rd?

Thanks,

SKippy344 >confused.gif>

I take it that you changed the clutch yourself, which for starters was probly a no no! >thumbsdown.gif>
I have the same problem with third, It is harder to get in than any other gear and it sometimes grinds especially when its cold.
someone told me it was the syncros to.
don't know what i can do about it and not end up spending alot of money.
Try changing the manual transmision fluid, it may not solve the problem entirely, but it should reduce the grinding.
if it happens too often that means its a syncro problem, you may need to have the tranny redone. i had to have mine redone at 70K miles... luckly it was under warranty.

Same as my friends turbo'd civic. 3rd always grind. Thats why he jumps from second-to-fourth then third-to-fourth again.

=(
Hey man consider yourself luck mine is grinding into 3rd and it only has 86000 miles on it tell me if you find a solution. >biggrin.gif>
yeah, its like hard for me to downshift into first when im moving really slow. i pretty much have to come to a complete stop to shirft into first.

Alright folks, I think I'm gonna break down and take it to a Tranny shop and let them give me the bad news about cost to fix the grinding/not going into gear problem.

I'll let you folks know what they say.
Yeah, I got 157k miles on mine and 3rd has been grinding for the past 50k >tongue.gif> It just recently got bad where I could be sitting at a light and it would try to go into 3rd with my hand resting on it. I changed the clutch fluid a few weeks ago (was all black and burnt) and it's been diminished significantly. Also, there are like 2 ways to put it in 3rd. I found that if I shifted just a little bit more the right when putting it in 3rd, it didn't grind. Just a thought.
mine starting to do in 3rd, its got 61,000k. i'm going to look for TSB's when i get to work and see if toyota had a problem with the 6th gen's trans i'll let u know what i find. and yes it does sound like synchros, but its kinda weird that we r all having the same problem. if i don't find anything in the TSB's i may call tech line.
i put 139k on my original cluct/tranny...never had a 3rd gear problem, and i drive min elike i stole it and am making a run for the border
I just bought my celli its got 52k miles and its doesnt like to go into 1st gear if im goin about 5mph.... I thought toyotas just did that? Dont tell me somins goin at 52k miles! >redface.gif>
yup same here, 110 000 miles, wont go into first gear unless im barley moving, second i have to jam in pretty hard, and 3rd geear grinds a bit sometimes, gonna have to try changing the tranny fluid, although i just got a new clutch, so was it changed?
does it work when you guys rev match 1st?
Your car isnt supposed to go into first easily at all unless you make a nearly full stop.....thats the work of synchros. So when you go to stop, only downshift to 2nd, then press in your clutch and gently let the gear slide into 1st. The gears only line up correctly when your doing like maybe 5 mph or under, due to the synchros that have to line up your gears correctly.

EDIT- Also, my gearbox grinds a little when shifting from 3rd to 4th....so i have a similar situation cuz my car has high mileage and probably needs some new synchros too.

3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting.
my 3rd gear has started doing this yet it only does it ocastionly and its normaly completely fine, I even had it happen when I double clutched, anyone have any idea?
hmm ya i sometimes have problems in 2nd gear. When i decide to downshift into 2nd gear at 40 mph at 4300 rpm's it can tend to grind every once in a while. But in 1st or 3rd i have no problem downshifting. In 1st gear i can downshift when im going 30mph at 5,000 rpms and 1st gear tops out at 35mph. the same with 3rd gear. so why is it that its only 2nd gear that does it for me. The previous owner was a chick. i got the car at 75,000 miles

yay haha, my dad said to bleed the clutch fluid, and I just did a transmission fluid like 5000km ago.
