im venturing into getting an LCD monitor for christmas, i just dont know what too much to look for... so far the one im looking at is this one becuase i can get it for $320...

now i know the response time of 12ms is good, but i dont know what a good dot pitch, brightness or contrast ratio is.... so if anyone knows anything about this stuff lemme know....

That unit has good contrast ration: the higher the better for the x:1 and 600:1 is good. The lowest dot pitch is .25 and the lower the better so that good too. It should serve you well. Get some good component cable, monster power is always best. & DVD w/ progressive scan and you'll have a super clear picture. Not sure of the brightness, i'll ask about that tom. at work and see whats a good level or not.

Good brand, but you can find cheaper onces that are just as good, i would take a look at costco, they have good onces and at low prices. plus you can return it for any reason, gata love costcos return policy.

nah, i wanna get it through work (best buy), cuz their return policy is even better if your an employee... i just get a new one... and i was leaning towards the samsung becuase we have those all over the store, and man do we put those things through hell... so i know it can stand up to some abuse.... regarding the cables thats the only thing i dont like about it.... it only has the standard 15pin monitor cable, i would have liked to be able to use a DVI cable... but oh well....

done my homework on this, and i can share with you what i've found :

try it before you buy it. when i say try it, load up a game or a DVD on it, and play around. see if there is any ghosting. when you first get the monitor, open it up and look for any dead pixels on the screen. stand back & to the side to check out the VIEWING ANGLE of it. you really gotta dig in & be critical of this monitor, cause you'll be staring at it for hours on end, and notice any problems as soon as you start to really use it.

do not buy a panel that's rated 25ms or higher.

samsungs rule, i'm getting the 710T. it's the same as all the samsungs you've been seeing, except it's got DVI and a 12ms response time. you can check this out here.

DVI is preferred, but not required. although, i would strongly suggest you get one with DVI input/output on it.

ya the 712N has the 12ms response time too... only difference i see is that has a DVI port.... which isnt worth the extra $110 to me... same brightness same contrast ratio... and i wouldnt buy one with a response time over 15ms, nevermind 25ms...

well that DVI helps with clarity/sharpness. i honestly don't think it's worth the extra cash either, but i'm going to spring for it. i have a feeling i'd regret it otherwise.

ok couple of questions to all of you who know what they are talking about.

Is it worth spending an extra 50 bucks to go from 400-1 to 600-1 on contrass ratio? Is there that much of a difference? Because I see $1600
dollar monitor with 400-1.

what is a good color support? 16 million a good minum? ( 24 bit?)

what is a good max sync rate? 85 hz? will anything lower do?

what is a " good" reponse time? 15 sounds like the minimal

Are there certain handy caps? like a smaller monitor will have lower resolution compaired to a 20 in monitor, reponse time.. ect?

pretty much i'm comparing the VIEWSONIC VX2000 and the PLANAR
PL2010M. Which one is better? And are there better monitors with in there price range?

Yes, it is worth an extra 50 bucks to get 600-1 contrast ratio..

(I nearly said you guys were pyscho for 1600 dollar screens, then I realized u're talkinng about full desktop)
