Well it's finally getting cold over here in the Bay Area (cold relative to what I'm used to) and when I came out this morning all of my windows were lightly frosted over, and the top of my car was pretty white. It doesn't snow or anything, but I don't have any way to get the stuff off. I went and got some water from inside (inside temperature water) and poured it on my windshield, but it took a couple of bottles to get enough ice off that I was able to drive to school.

Anyway, after running the defroster I realized that it helped to melt the ice also, so tomorrow I'm going to start the car up and let it warm up the windows for a while to see if that helps the problem. Does anyone else have any other idea of what I can do? I can't stand the noise of the squeegee trying to scrape off the ice either, so that's a no. That's just one of those sounds that chills my bones (like biting into ice cream brrrr). Any help is appreciated guys!

Go sit in your car listen to music with the defroster on high for a while that should work, or you could buy an ice scraper.

Old credit cards etc work if you have nothing else. I wouldn't recommend water really because if you drive right away afterwards the water you poured on will just freeze...

Does that seem funny to anyone else or am I the only one? It's called the defroster, so wouldn't you assume it's used to ...I dunno... defrost?

Okay, Ice scrapers are great, but I do not know how easy they are to get in the bay area. A plastic putty knife/plaster spreader will work. Running the engine with the defrost on full heat helps too. If it is really close to freezing, sub zero windshield washer fluid helps.

Yes I am serious, I was hoping for helpful replies that might be things I wouldn't think of. I thought water would only crack the windshield if there was a sudden temperature change, and the defroster thing...I mostly use the defroster to clear the window up when it fogs on the inside, because it doesn't work fast enough to get anything off of the outside of the window.

And it's not cold enough to freeze the water again, its only about 35-40 degrees out in the morning so there is just leftover frost from the nighttime. As for an ice scraper, I would think that would scratch the window pretty easily, wouldn't it? Thanks to anyone that gave helpful comments.

i guess some people just dont know what defroster means.... especially the "frost" part.... and mabey even the "de" part

buy an alarm with remote start and leave the defrosters on high from the night before, then when you are getting ready in the morning, remote start the car and it will warm up and start defrosting the windows

or just go out and start the car so it warms up and gives the defrosters time to work.

Theres a windshield washer fluid called "fire" or something similiar which melts the frost when you spray it and it'll wash ur windows too.

well for the front windsheild I find turning the defroster on full blast and also putting the wipers on speeds things up rather quickly but the back is hopeless lol. I haven't run into any trouble yet but if I do I jsut take the bus I guess...

LOL you should come live in Utah and wake up to about an inch of JUST FROST on your car. That is what sucks my friends. Having to scrape that stuff anytime you wan to go anywhere. GRRR...thats the bad thing about Utah, our weather is absolutely terrible. Today the high is going to be 29 degrees. ITS FREAKIN COLD!

dude your question is just too funny, especially from someone who has lived in Toronto, and upsate new york.

The frost you have in the bay area is minimal, turn the defroster on, and and use winter windshied wiper fluid. Also, sometimes turning the AC switch on and running the defroster keeps the windshield from re-fogging. You don't need an ice-scraper, since the frost is pretty minimal, whatever you do, don't pour water on the car, its a bad idea, lucky for you you live in the bay area, if you do that somewhere where it stay below freezing, you just created a huge mess, with the potential to freeze any moving parts.

Thanks everyone and no I wasn't claiming that this was a lot of frost or something cuz I know this is almost as pussy as it gets, I just wanted to get some tips from the pros. Took about 5 mins running the defroster at full blast this morning then a little squeegee clean up before I was able to drive.

i got a blue ice scraper to go along with my blue interior... isnt that the coolest.

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.

Well I don't know how cold it gets in the bay area but in Minnesota its getting to be really cold. We had a snow fall just the other day. Every morning for the past coupleof weeks now my windows are frosted (kinda used to it so not a big deal). What I used when I was in a hurry was some gift cards I took from a department store because I work in one.

But normally before school I go out and start the car, turn on the heater and rear defrost, let it warm up for 5-10 minutes everyday before I go to school.

So my advice is go out about 5 minutes early and warm your car up and the frost will "magically dissappear", ITS CRAZY!
