So i wanted to know what you guys who are 'In the Know' think about this:
other then engine displacemnt and obvious advantages the 3sgte has i want to know what you guys think is more worth wild. Iv been doing alot of my homework and have basiclly decided on simply swaping my 5s-fe with a 3s-gte, BUT i was wondering what you guys WITH either 3s-gte's or 5s-fte's think about it. What seems more worth is, AND if i were to turbo a 5s-fe how much boost can i push safely with out any internal work? All of your imput would be very helpfull...

If you got the time, money and ability do the 3sgte.

If you have time to wait for good deals and do research, do the 5sfTe.

3sgte will own a stock bottom no timming 5sfTe. A built 5sfTe should own a stock 3sgte.

Modded 3sgte vs. built 5sfTe is always in argument. Once I get my settup up and running I'll find DG and get that race out of him he promised me.

3sgte cost > 5sfTe cost

Cost can be changed if you sell things off your 3sgte clip for profit.

Its all very flexable.

its a matter of what your goals are and how big your pocketbook is.
that about sums it up.
high boost more $$ more potential= 3s swap
low boost low $$ = 5sfte
basicly IMO it breaks down like this:
if you ultimately want OVER 200-225WHP and have the $$ then the 3s swap is what you want
if your cheap ( or like in my case, just broke..lol) and arnt looking for more than a kick in the pants for your car, then the 5sfte is more likley to be what you want, unless you really wanna spend the money and beef the engine up some.

3sgte.. its been done.. and its a great engine.. and in the right hands can do great things for your celi ( in the right hands) ... but on the down side... even and engine made for boost can be damaged every easy .. in the wrong hands.. trust me i know ...

5sfte - not done that much... and its a great engine and wonderfully thing can be done to it in the right hands... yea the engine wasn't made for boost.. but like ever engine out there is can handle a bit more then the N/A 14.3 lbs or air pressure.. its limits.. well thats the one good thing about the 5s (in the us) so many of thim if you want to really test it out you can and if you blow then motor... you can get on the next day...

3sgte > 5sfte period

3sgte is a realiable turbo motor. there are many alltrac and mr2 owners runing 10-15psi everyday for 100,000 miles or more. so in my book, that makes it more worth while.

on the other hand, you have the 5sfTe. many celica owners have tried and quite a few didnt work out, but there are some new projects on the horizon that are looking good... time will really tell how well the 5sfe handles in the long run, but it can be a cheaper alternative for some people...if it works out. if you end up blowing a motor, and having to swap in another one, the cost will end up being about the same as a 3s swap.

either way, get read to dump some money into your car, and have fun with it. youll learn a lot about your car in the process.

If ur looking for a decent power gain, just turbo ur GT. It doesn't take nearly as long as a full swap. And if the celi is ur only car, like me, you'll need it pretty much everday. At least with the turbo, if u need to take it out, play around with it, and put it back in, it only takes a few hours, since all ur taking out is the turbo.

Now if ur looking to totally OWN other cars, and willing to spend the dough to fully beef up the 3sgte to its full potential, then go that route. Just keep in mind the time it takes to disconnect, remove, and reconnect the entire engine and connecting "noodles".

Process/simplicity of turbo= pacemaker
Process/simplicity of swap= entire heart transplant

Keep in mind neither options are flawless. People have done both and failed with both. On the other hand, people have done both and been successful. It all comes down to time and money, and your personal goals u want to achieve. It took me a year, an extra turbo, and a rebuilt turbo to get my setup fully completed.

Even if the 3s is ur daily driver, you'll be fine. Remember- Highly qualified engieers built that motor to handle boost. As for a 5sfte, well you built that. Maybe you're smart, but can you design an engine from scartch?

nothing is being done to the 5s-fe that hasn't been done to weaker engines for year.. many years before most of the people on this site where and itch in your daddies left nut....

have any of you wondered why the 5s was used in many toyota cars... and in the top selling car in toyota line up for so long? and do ya'll think that before they put that engine in those cars. they were not tested to hell and back.. and yes including boosting it? ...... well let me stop before i say something to get me kicked of this site.. ... well let me say something... if the celica is the only car you have worked on.. and by that i mean done realy engine work on... please leave this to those that have worked on the 5s and at least one other engine from another maker...

Hm, touch a nerve, did I? I doubt my automotive knowledge is up to yours. But give me this, i'm no slouch. 2 yrs of auto tech and i've helped perform 2 h22 swaps into accords, help build a b18c1, t3/t4 sr20 turbo upgrade, and only enough to destory a 3000gt's engine. (dropped a washer in the intake manifold. but i still think it was one of the hicks that did it in my autotech class. They didnt care for me and my 4bangin friends.)

I highly doubt the toyota researchers would waste money boosting a 5s, just so they could say "what if". I'm sure they beat on it to find it's limits, but no boost. But hey, prove me wrong.

I don't have to prove you or anyone wrong... if you been around enuff engines..they you know.. what can be done to any engine.. if done right... just have to take your time... and nice for you with all the swaps and engine work you have done.... .. and yes i'm tired of everyone say this is better then that.. or that is better then this... when you seen the things i have.. you'll know better..

now im the one getting sick of this topic debate! >>

everyone needs to shut up and put up. if you like the 5sfTe...make it happen! if you like the 3sgte ....order a clip today! we need more turbo celicas out there owning all the honda ricers, not pointless debates.

thanks alot to all of you for your input and i think ill take my fellow GT friends idea and start looking more into a 5s-fte, iv done alot of research and it is my everyday driver so it might be fun and a challange to turbo it. I am not a "mechanic" but i have ALOT of expericence with 4 bangers and know my way around the 5s-fe well.

Im going to do a good diagnostic check on my current engine and if its still strong ill turbo it, if not ill look into the swap, and if not that ill get a mustang (JUST KIDDING)
