have see 'Fast and Furious' on dvd again yesterday, i know i'm sad >>

just a question to you guys, can you cut the roof of a celica and form a removable roof section like the supra in the film, i've seen these supras around !
and they where a standard from Toyota... but not a celica spec'

i don't know, but i think it could make a smart mod' to a ride !!

what do you guy think, and can it be done ????

Its called a Targa top. They were pre-bult like this from the factory. You CAN NOT do this to a Celica. If you want a Targa, go buy a Supra, Del Sol, or NSX. If you cut the roof out, the frame would buckle. Stick with your sunroof.

i broke the back of my 'capri' in the 80's trying it >>

i thought a targa top was when you still had the strip in the middle of the roof like with MR 2's !!!!

Thats called T-Tops, because of the shape of a T on the roof. Targa is a complete roof removal. However >>, Targa is no longer in production and there will be no more Targas ever.

Covrvettes do have them, thats hwy they rule. There are a lot of rare cares that have them as an option u would never think about.

As Far as I know, there is not a BMW in the states that has a targa. Only convertable and sun-roof.

You could surley take a convertable. Make a rof, then make a targa, but that would be just plain stupid if u ask me.

t-top: 2 planels above pass and driver. has a rod down the middle. EX: MR2, camaro

Targa: the roof comes off, but only as far back as about 2 feet. EX: corvette, del sol, supra, nsx

Convertable: I'm pretty sure you've figuered that one out.

why t-tops. They norm get more leaks, and the have a bar in the middle. I personally like targas the best.

why not find a coupe at a junk yard cot the top off of that bring it home fabricate it to mount up and you have a targa. similar to a hard top s2000 they have removable roofs also... i think he means similar to a convertable where the top is copletely "down" except it is a hard top. am i right?

an if you can have a soft top car, why can't you just strenghen a
standard celica like a convertable and slice the roof ???

get a rag top and put a cut off roof section from a coupe. A lot of work must be dun but itll be the targa type tope jsut on a coupe and not a hatch.

We've discussed this before. What it comes down to is that the coupe top is a lot heavier than the soft top a vert is braced for- you'd be trying to secure a VERY HEAVY hardtop by only a few bolts or whatever, and things will go wrong.

Same reason with the targa top- except if you chop the roof in half you no longer have the advantage of the flying buttress design to distribute the weight- so it'll land on your back quarter windows.

What would could do if you already had a celica convertible, you could take and cut the top of a matching hard top celica and mod it to work with the convertible, rather then the cloth top, but it would not be an easy job. With that in mind you could also make a t top or targe with the same top frum the convertible, but its a big project.

Shid, I actually think you could probably put a hardtop on without doing any damage to the car. I think the car could easily support an extra 100-200 or so lbs. of roof. I mean, the car is designed to be able to hold four full-sized people in it. >>

Its the stress points tho- where are you going to attach that extra weight? Where is the weight going to flow to? Etc etc

I have to agree with Shid. You also take into affect of wind resistance. Figuring a Targa on a Celica would act like a big parachute dragging behind the car.

I haven't looked up close at how the top goes down, but most of the weight would rest where the back of the hardtop would connect to the car, with some of the weight resting on the convertible's [re-inforced] a-pillars.

I don't think we have reinforced A frames- at least it wasn't on the list of reinforced areas Jay was talking about when he got the diagrams. And still, it's the stress points man.

You can stand up fine- but how long can you stand on your tiptoes with all your weight just on two points?

hey guys, I had a del sol before the celica, and a targa top is not all that great. The roof is hard to get off by yourself, and it takes room in the trunk. Not to mention the car is unsecure with the roof off.

The del sol compensated for the security and had locking chests in the back, and a cover for the radio so it would not be so evident. Anyways, I much more enjoy my sunroof then the targa top.

(sorry shid, I did not read though all the post when I added my point, I should have befor my comment)

I think (now) that a targa or T top are just to extream (with enough money and time you can really do anything but not worth it at all) I think its posible to make a hard top out of a reg top of a coupe, you can take it apart and lighen it up enough to make it ok, but from my understanding the convertible has way more support in the sides and windsheal to hold it, because withough that it would not be drivable. (wabble all over the place)

all in all my final opinion is its posible and practical just for those with great knowlage and exsperiance (and money)

in regards to the removable hardtop, i think i agree with both Commer and Shid. I agree with Commer that the celi vert will easily be able to handle the extra wieght of a hardtop. But agree with Shid that there is a lack of places to properly secure it on. The front on the A frame is no problem, especially if you create a lightened top that is nothing but fiberglass and insulation, those can be secured on to the points where the vert latches to. It will not carry the bulk of the weight. Where it will have the greatest weight is right above the rear seats due to the arch shape and rear window i assume that hard top will have. Probably some sort of arch pillars will have to be made that connect from the floor in rear up to the hard top roof as well as some crafty latches to secure the top to the rear behind where the top goes down.

Its definatly possible with some craftiness... but id never want to autocross with it.
