diff. b/t the 5sfe and 3sgte - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #21118 21 posts Started by soma
can someone fill me in on, apart from the turbo, what is it exactly that makes the 3sgte so much faster than the 5sfe?
the turbo does the most, but the motor also has dual overhead cams insted of the single ones in the 5sfe.

are you sure the 5sfe is a sohc? i've read that it's a dohc... here's a link...http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/5sfestats.htm
the two biggest diffrences i can think of off the top of my head are the GE head design, and the bore & stroke diffrences.
also, compression #'s
the whole "turbo system"
and a crap load of other little things

sorry to say this, but the 5sfe is a DOHC, same as the 7afe, 3sge, 3sgte, etc....

i thought so... thought i was going crazy there for a sec. >smile.gif>
3S, imo, is more of a quality motor. The forged internals, easier power gain, ect.

Cast Iron Block (3s-gte)
Aluminum Block (5s-fe)

Larger injectors, aggressive ECU... and everything else that the other said. The 3s-gte was designed as a racing engine, where the 5s was designed as a commuter eco engine.

What makes you think the stock 3sgte has forged internals?

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
It doesnt have forged internals, its not any higher quality than the 5s, it maybe a little tougher but its a turbo charged engine. The internals are hypercuric (sp).

The 5s is an economy engine, its a 2.2L dohc naturally aspirated engine while the 3sgte is a performance engine, 2.0L, low compression, turbocharged engine. They're 2 totally different entities.

Hm, I was told different. Hm, guess its not such a contender for the sr20 afterall

Uh, sure if you say so, since you obviously know so much about both engines.

The 5S-FE looks like a single over head cam design if you take off the timing belt cover and look were the belts run. There's only a single gear there that turns the cams. Easily mistakable for SOHC.

5sfe from the U.S......3sgte from kickass japan....that should be enough info
Except for the fact that this site's basic information says it's DOHC.

Anyways, Super is right. You can compare them if you want, but really they are two totally different motors. It would be different you were comparing a 3SGE and 3SGTE, because the differences are more specific, but comparing the 5SFE and 3SGTE you get too many differences and some of them are really vague because that's the only way to describe them.

Fill me in then. As I understand, the sr20's internals are stronger and in turn support more hp.

The differences in internal parts can be changed easily, the real difference is in the head design. First they are both DOHC, but the 3s has 2 cam gears while the 5s has 1 cam gear and the exhaust (or intake, i can't remember) is a slave to the other. The other big difference is the angle between the valves. On the 3s the valve angle is 45 degrees and on the 5s it is 22 (or something like that). The internals in the 3s are not forged, they are hypertectic. The other difference is the obvious displacement, but the reason for the power difference is because of the valve angle.
Junior, me and Slow are talking bout the 3s and SR20, not the 3s and 5s. To that fact, I wont get into the SR20 here, and if you go to Alltrac.net or SR20 forums, you'll probably see that both are biased towards one another. SR20 guys think its the greatest engine in the world, and its a good engine, yes I agree, but its not a 3sgte.

i only asked because i was wondering if it would be easier/cheaper/just as effective just to beef up the 5sfe than to do a 3sgte swap...
i only saw one cam gear on my 5s and two cam gears on my 3s. so that lead me to believe one is single and the other is dohc.

The 5s-fe also has a cast iron block
