IT WORKS!!!!!! custom shifter - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #21534 24 posts Started by Digndoug
Ok, as Some of you know, I did the custom lancer/evo short shifter. When i did it was a lill stiff and hard to shift in gears... worked great but hard. I finally took a look and fixed it. So Its PERFECT! What I had to do was cut two plastic peaces of the assembly for thw shifter linkage on the right to sit down a little lower so it wont bend. It took me like 3 hours today to figure it out and fix it.. but its perfect and well well worth it.

Just thought i would update ya'll that were intrested but skeptical about doing it.
nice work..now only if i had a 5 speed.

Do you think the Toyota one is worth the extra cost, or is the feel the same?

If anyone needs interior stuff, etc, I'm parting whats left of my celi out. Just ask.

Is the Evo one a short shift, or a short throw?

What do you mean? by shift and throw.
Ok I finally got around to putting mine in( 7th gen celica short shifter off ebay) I didn't have to do any modifications at all to the shifter. Everything fit fine even the spacers that came with the kit. Total with shipping from ebay was $45 if I remember right.

Dindoug is right you do have to cut a piece of plastic out or it will be really stiff. But its easy to do I just took a hacksaw blade and cut it. It took me 5 mins to cut it out.

Total install time was about an hour and a half. The tuffest part is getting the big pin out with the washer that holds it in. I took a screw driver pried the washer out and just slid the pin out. The other pin that holds the shifter in you just punch out with a punch.

With the 7th gen shifter I didn't have to dremel anything. And I used the original bolts. I did take out the rubber grommets that the bolts slide through, because the spacers that come with the kit replace those. The throw is definatly shorter, and it is crisper. I only took it for a 15 minute test run.
Any chance you could show photos of which bits of plastic need to be cut?

There is only 1 piece of plastic that needs to be cut, it is underneath the shifter cable after it passes through the shifter housing. You will be able to tell, its the cable that goes to the bottom of the shifter, and when you install it back in the cable rests on that peice of plastic and bends it up a little.

As for which one I bought they are both the same thing, and yea that is what I got.

looks like I'm gana have to get one now.
hmm, i wonder who bought that first one...
sounds good, but i got a cool looking ball... >wink.gif> an mine was a lil cheaper.. well bout 10 bucks
Yea well my dad can beat up your dad! lol j/k

For me it was just easier I didnt have to mess with washers, and grinding the ball down. Besides I like the look of my stock shifter better.
Is this true ? a 7gen short shifter will work in our cars ?

Yes both a 7th gen and a lancer/evo will work.

The 7th gen is about $10 more, BUT you dont have to grind down the balls a lil and take another trip to the hardware store. But the lancer/evo comes with a nice chrome ball..
hey Rjb23, how close is the knob to the dash when you are in 1st, 3rd, and 5th ?
