Painting brake calipers - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #22437 16 posts Started by bloodrain
I want to paint my brake calipers to match my car, can someone give me some advice besides "dont get paint in the wrong areas." Im thinkin I should grind away most of the brake dust, and then get some rubbing alcohol. What am I missing?

I painted my calipers yesterday. I used brake cleaner, followed by 180 grit sandpaper, followed by Duplicolor 500 degree high-heat paint. I used two color coats and two clear coats.

hmm, you think that will be good enough to hold it there? I'll just copy you since I think you know what your doing, lol

Hopefully it'll hold up. I got everything really clean, so I don't see why it wouldn't. I'll find out when I install my brakes though. You might want to find some good how-to articles on Google or something before you paint yours though.

i got mine painted at my local mechanic store, can't really give you advice on it but all i can say is.. better make sure it's dry before driving your car... you'll get paint on your brake rotors.. it happened to me... >frown.gif>

Duplicolor sells a brake caliper painting kit at stores like Wal-Mart, Autozone, NAPA, etc. that comes with everything you need plus instructions. It comes with some cleaner and a can of paint with an application brush- this way you dont have to mask off everything and worry about spraying your rotors red or something.

I've been trying to pick up one in silver to match my car, but I can usually only find red and yellow anywhere, plus im lazy and dont have time to hunt around lately. But its definately the way to go, IMO.

i just bought a can of hi temp spray, cleaned the caliper a little with brake cleaner. and gave it a couple coats, the hit it with hi temp clear. good to go.

i didn't give it time to dry(should have). only an hour or so and it'll be fine.

How long have your calipers been painted Drocay? And how have they held up over time?

about a month now, but i've been driving harder than i usually do. It hasn't changed a bit, i thought it had faded but i washed my car yesterday and i wiped the caliper and it just had brake dust on it and it was just as nice as first day.
