hi all,
just want to know something abut overdrive. i noticed when im at a full stop, turning o/d off (lights orange on dash), seems to go more smooth....but when i hit around 35 mph...motor starts running hard...when i engage o/D its all smooth...whats the deal between it anyways?....newbie here.... >

O/D is a gas saving feature, it makes the motor run harder when its off because the car thinks you want more HP, not gas milage.

any1 know exactly how O/D works? And why would it be called "Over Drive" if you want to save gas, wouldnt it be Under Drive?

let me see if i can explane this... while my brain is semi funtional right now...

Over Drive... is another gear in ur tranny .... by disabling it... u tranny goes back down into 3 gear and lets ur engine rev higher... while it is one .. at higher speeds.. the tranny shift into high gears as lower engine revs... wich makes for a smoother ride and saves on gas.... and as for the name ... don't know... there are a lot of things on cars.. that i feel are named wrong..

thanks for the explanation. Ya there are alot of things named wrong, headlights, tail lights, over drive, you drive on a parkway and park on a drive way, go figure :-p

it also changes the shift points, atleast in my GF's 7th gen that is.

I used to leave it off when I was driving around town. My car is very loud and with higher rpms it was louder. after a month or so with it off my car started acting funny and the trans was acting up. I turned it back on and the probs went away. I was not redlining it either.
