short shifter installed - 6G Celicas Forums
guessing those brands are as good? I wasn't sure, just thought i'd find the same brand BATMAN722 used to be on the safe side. thanks guys.

just installed it actually, install took longer then i thought, about 1.5hours, partly because i did it instead of sleeping so i was working sloppy and slowly haha
I used all the metal bushings and they do make the shift a lot more firm then the stock rubber ones.
The short shift is literally like 1 inch movement into each gear.
Personally I think it works great! Although i slightly miss a longer shift, i love the feeling of a short one too!
I did cut that little plastic piece even though it didn't even seem like it was really touching(just in case)
and I thought getting the clips off of the stock shift bar was easy. Just took a 12mm wrench i think it was, slipped it under the clip, stood off a step with the wrench under my foot and gave the bar a nice easy whack of a hammer using a screw driver to bump them apart, only took 1 try. No vice needed!
In 1st and 2nd gear it does seem a tad close to the parking break but i personally find it nothing to fuss over. I have rather large hands myself and it isnt an issue for me, mostly because i grab my shifter from the right side. Unless you shift mostly with your hand ontop towards the left of your knob, i don't see this really being an issue....

sorry to bring this thread back to life, but i lost the clip , i bought one from a hardware store, but it doesnt really fit, what should i do ?

nice, was wondering if the shifter feels a bit rough when shifting. I've been using my 7th gen short shifter for about 3 years and feels a little rough in between gears sometimes. Not really a big issue though, just wondering.

i agree, the twm instructions aren't very thorough.
i took off the shift knob, the plastic around the shifter, the leather shift boot, and the big center compartment + cup holder around the e-brake. i did NOT take out the trim that touches the carpet right beside the shifter and goes down by your legs a little bit. images number 9 and 10 on the twm instructions look like they took off that. they might have just taken more off in the image so they could give you an idea of depth in what you're supposed to be playing with.
it's very cramped, but it is do-able.
i never removed the big white plastic shift assembly from the car either. i undid the four bolts, after that it flops around enough to do all the other work. when detaching the bottom shift cable you need to pull the little dark verticle clips to either side to let the bottom of the old shifter come free.
i don't recall what i used instead of a punch for step 9, might've been a screw driver of some smaller sort.
the biggest thing that helps with the 7th gen shifter is the metal bushings (which in my case were purple) that REPLACE the old rubber and metal ones, each of the 4 bolts that go through the white assembly have a metal+rubber thing that can be replaced with the new metal ones. the new ones will elevate the big white assembly and at the same time bolt it, directly, without play to the chassis...this is a tedious job, but it is do able. try doing the front two first then just beginning to thread the new long bolts (don't tighten until all 4 are in of course) then do the rear two.
when i got the old shift knob out, i used a regular adjustable wrench to remove the two plastic cups on the shift knob. pretty easy, jsut get it to the right size to twist/pry the cups off the ball (be careful not to let them fly across the room). the cup fit very tight on the bottom "ball" of the new shift knob, it's ok though.
after that you mostly re-assemble it. i used white lithium grease for all lubrication.
hopefully that'll help, i'll pm you my number just in case.

i've got the center console out. four bolts are out. the clip on the front right of the shifter... i've loosened but I didn't take it completely off. I can't punch out whatever is in step 9 right now. i'm going to look for something to punch it out with.
hmmm, i remember fussing with that one for a bit...iirc it has that hole in the center that you don't want to splay outward, though i don't recall much danger of that. perhaps the blunt end of an old drill bit. maybe an ink pen.

well it looks like i got a new one with the ralco kit. but i can't get it out. i tried a screwdriver, which was working but then the screwdriver got stuck inside and i had to hammer it back in to get it out...

Does it have to be a "short throw 7gc shifter" or does a stock 7gc shifter work as well?

ok i think the L shaped arm is step 10. i think the pin on the L shaped arm is something that was missing on mine, there is a hole going through the cylindrical piece on the L shaped arm. normally there is a steel paper clip type thing through that hole. i just got some steel wire and bent it and put it in there. with the cable tension being what it is, i think it's just toyota's tahara plant making sure everything is double re-inforced.
the part that you lost...that's a rough one, i didn't lose mine (was lucky) i'd first say to look for it a bit. but then i think it might be a part you can get at a hardware shop...i thought there was something in the 12 pages of this thread about it. or perhaps in another short shifter thread. i'll do my best to find info tomorrow (long day today).

not sure if i read all yours posts to know what youre asking, but a short throw 7gc shifter works and so will a stock 7gc shifter but not sure what advantage that gives you. just keep in mind a 7gc stick only works not the whole assy.

not sure if i read all yours posts to know what youre asking, but a short throw 7gc shifter works and so will a stock 7gc shifter but not sure what advantage that gives you. just keep in mind a 7gc stick only works not the whole assy.

ok, on page 2 of this thread, about 15% down the scrollbar, batman has a picture of the clip, and says it can be bought at a hardware store for 25 cents or so. it's the one that's sorta like a washer with little tabs that stick inward around the inner circle.
I found it! It had gone under the carpet.
Everything is off. Can't thank you guys enough for the assist. One last question, before you threw on the metal bushings, did you remove all of the rubber bushings/pieces on there now, plus the little metal stand?

yup, removed all the rubber and the metal pieces as well. then put the purple (in my case) aluminum risers in. some of them don't sit stable until you get the screws tightened, so there was some trial and error for me.
also i felt i should cut 2 small slits into the carpet on the drivers side, just to get the carpet to fold upward around the shift assembly and not be bunched. the slts are completely concealed under the trim, and the bunching was sortof visible when i looked for it, so figured it was the lesser of 2 evils.

taking too long to mod since '09June '12 COTM'95 AT200
mine only ever feels a little rough going into 4th. and not always. not sure what conditions cause it yet.
Here it is. All installed with a knock off TRD shift knob. No roughness. Very tight. Used a Ralco RZ 7th gen. Thanks everyone! Best upgrade yet.
Been on ebay for about an hour now looking at short shifters (7gc). Looking to spend $60 or less. Is their any particular brand anyone recommends. The Ralco and Megan look pretty good.
