Rear Speaker Install - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #23095 17 posts Started by jds7188
alright. the other day i bought four 6.5 inch Polk Audio db650's to replace my blown stockers. me and a friend were removing the rear panels yesterday when we realized that the factory is indeed a 6.5in, but the metal piece around the factory speaker and the bracket in the door is like a rounded square. how would i go about installing round speakers in their place? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
the car is a 1995 GT hatchback by the way.
i have a 97 ST hatch and this is what i had to do. i had to get out my grinding rotary tool to grind away the plastic to make the speaker fit the bracket. then i had to use the metal square things that come with the speakers to hold them in. i screwed them on the screws then bended them around. was kind of a bitch to do but worked and they havent fallen out yet. maybe you can think of something better to mount them since the holes dont match up.
alright thanks man, we were considering that, but just wanted to see what everyone else was doin first. thanks.
any other suggestions would be appreciated.
I think i grinded out the plastic on the rears as well. can remeber to well it was a while ago.

I will return one day.

why didnt you just get "6,i suppose they hard to get
glad this came up... im about to put 6 1/2's in the back... i hope it goes well
yea. haha its gonna be a job but if that's what it takes, then u gotta do it.
how about the fronts, were there any similar problems with those?
i had to make custom mounting brackets to make them fit. the stockers were oversized 6's that were the size of 8's. just cut a piece of wood out to adapt it or buy a pair off ebay. its not too hard.
mine went right in with no problem. i recently did the whole 6.5" speakers all around, front and back. i have a 94 st hatch.

I had to grind too... I took a dremmel tool and ground off all the edges then I took a drill and drilled a couple new holes. Works perfectly.
i think ill just make some brackets for the fronts then.

i bought these spacers for my fronts to fit 6.5"s,

and they work fine, would these work to fit 6.5"s in the back too? or is it a completely different thing?

i dont think they would fit in the back cus its like a rounded square opening and its too small for the speaker, so u would have to girnd something.

gonna start the project today. ill keep u posted and let u know what went down. thanks for the replies.
I think mine went straight into the rear, but judging from the materials if you cut a little and then redrilled I think you should be ok.
