just an idea but would a beams 3sge with a turbo pushing the same stock 12psi as a 3rd gen 3sgte be more powerful considering that it does around 180-200 n/a already?

to tell the truth not considering any other factors, it would do the same or maybe less.the 3sge engine, is the base design for the 3sgte.........same internals, etc...............if you want to see the specs i can post it up........and a stock 3sge engine gone turbo, wouldnt be able to safly boost at 12 psi without somn giving.

Hi, I am thinking about turboing my 3rd gen. 3s-ge. I have read Coomer's post saying it is difficult as it is much different from 3s-gte and would require serious work on strengthening the engine body. However, I have also read about a guy who turboed 3.0 supra engine (dont remember its code) without any serious upgrades (even not changing gasket or pistons). By adding 0,6 bar pressure he reached 320 hp while nominal was 220 hp. I wonder if adding 0,3-0,4 bar without decompressing the engine could give me additional 40-50 hp (I could even go for gasket and pistons to get that as they cost around 600$).

Anyway, if you could post me the specs (mail: tompoz@celica-club.org.pl) it would be easier for me to decide how to proceed with this ambitious plan.

BTW - you guys in US are so lucky you can get reasonably priced 3s-gte for swap. In Europe 3rd gen. 3s-gte (with tranny, harness, ECU) costs around 4-5k $ plus 1,5 k $ for installation and tuning. Beyond my reach. >> Turboing would cost 3k $ for everything - and this I could afford.

I don't think turboing the regular 3S-GE could get you the same amount of hp as the 3S-GTE, since they are different (read: compression and internals). Also, if you are going to turbo ANY n/a motor you are in for a real workout. Some have done it on this forum, but way too many have been "thinking about turboing" and probably never gotten it finished or working like it should. Save some money and buy a 3S-GTE clip. (that won't be easy to install either, but alot safer then just turboing the 3S-GE, and maybe even cheaper in install if you don't have a bolt-on / drop in kit).

I also live in Europe (Norway) and for me to turbo my 7A-FE it would cost 2.500$ in labor and hold on.. 6.000$ in taxes for a 116-170 hp gain. So to do it legal just isn't working out. We are then talking 8.500$, and that's before you buy a single part.

Comparing with the Supra is probably a bad idea. Celica and Supra are two very different cars, and they are using two completely different engine types.

supra blocks are known to be strong.

most supra blocks can handle 900 hp without modification to the internals.

I think you should read more carefully - I do not want to reach 3s-gte hp, I know the cost of turboing if no internals (except for gasket and pistons for decompression) are to be changed, engine swap is beyond my reach. Specs would help me to decide if what I know is sufficient or not to do the turbo. If not then I will start looking around to buy GT4.

I have a GT 3S-GE engine in the car. I can say this for sure. In no way is it worth the money or the effort to either turbo the N/A engine or do a swap for a 3S-GTE engine.

You will gain maybe 30-40 bhp with the N/A-> Turbo with the problems of messing op the internals of the engine.
Or you will have 70 bhp gain with the 3S-GTE engine. But still you need a stronger tranny and even then i think its to much horsepower for the front wheels to handle. Thats why the 3S-GTE engine is a 4wd(I know it was build for rally first)

Unless you have a 1.8 ST Celica. But then u have to also change/modify the engine mounts etc etc. I Would say go for the GT4 then.

I was thinking about turboing my GT also. But came to realise that my car already has sufficient power. That was the first thing i realised when i came here and read about the engine swaps. I first thought US GT also had the 3S-GE engine but they dont.

Come to think of it. What are the spec of a US GT: in terms of Top Speed and 0-60
Specs of a Euro GT
0-60: 7.9 Seconds
Top Speed: 225 km/h (about 140 mph)

Specs of a GT4:
0-60: 6.1 Seconds
Top Speed: 245km/h (about 153 mph)
So TomPoz if you have a GT already. U will spend roughly about 5000-6000 on the modification to snap a speedo in 1.8 seconds faster. IFyou have traction on the Front Wheel Tires.

Well, I have GT. And I still consider turboing it. What I lack in my GT is acceleration - the beautifull "boost" that it gets at 5k RPM is bit too late. Turbo would provide that boost at 3-3,5k RPM. And the other thing is - if you compare 0-60 times in GT and GT4, then you get difference for 1/4 mile at 3-4 seconds. And for anyone who competes in 1/4 mile - it's huge!
