I think my 3rd gear synchro is gone, when I downshift without blipping it grinds. If I do blip i usually have to get it over 4000 before it stops. Anybody else have this problem.

by blipping do u mean reving ?

Try using redline mt-90 in the transmission. mr2's have problems with weak synchros and I know this stuff works wonders for them.

i put lucas oil stabalizer in for the tranny and it helped, for some reason the 3rd synch sucks on these cars, all other gears go in without a prob

It's a racing term, blipping means to tap the throttle enough to get the RPM higher than the lower gear. i.e. in fith gear at 3000 RPM I would blip to 4000 RPM and downshift into 4th.

I call it rev matching.. But some call it blipping, double clutching.. etc etc..

I was just passing thru and saw this thread... I'm old school, '89 ST165 GT4.
The problem you mention has been around since at least my E50 tranny. 3rd gear syncros notoriously weak, 1st will probably be the next to go. Not much you can do about it beyond stopgaps already mentioned. Almost everyone I know here in NYC has swapped tranny rather than the expense of repair!

BTW, I was taught to "blip the throttle" to rev match when downshifting almost 25 years ago! I'm with you!

I wonder if I can use the MR2 tranny with the 5S, It should bolt up with the mods done like a 3S swap. I don't know I heard something about the shift linkage is different.

Change your gear oil and use Pennzoil synchromesh from autozone. It will work wonders.
