Hey all, I've owned my '94 Celica ST for about a year now, and my step-sister owned it before before that, and her mom before that... Anyway its been in the family a wile and has almost 200k miles on it.

I'm planing on doing an engine swap with the 3S-GTE sooner or later, but I've been reading about VVT-i on the new toyota engines... and I've seen it put on the older supra 2JZ engines... I was wondering if it can be done to Gen3/Gen4 3S-GTE engine.

Also what tranny would you guys sugest? (Its currently an automatic, want to change to a manual...)

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.

not 100percent about this .. but i thing the 4th gen 3s engines have the VVT-i head... as for trany u can us the GT tranny .. the Camary V6 tranny ...

I'd think that you could use a redtop or blacktop BEAMS 3S-GE head on a 3S-GTE block...probably not worth it for the money though.

I'd go with an E153 tranny with LSD if you can afford one.

not sure why you would want vvti on a 3sgte. it simply adjusts cam timing to maximize torque, you realize that? maybe you're thinking of vvtli but still rather pointless. lift works wonders for n/a but with a turbo engine it ends up being a limiting factor

you can just upgrade the cams on the 3sgte and set them to anything u want.

if you are looking for somethign that will give you more power in the higher rpms, the 3sgte already has something called T-vis. it works by opening up a 4 extra intake runners after 4200rpm and gives you a boost of power.

quick question but everyone is recommending the mr2t tranny ofcourse becuz its factory made for the 3sgte but the gt tranny is a much much easier swap into an st considering all u need is gt axles and gt mounts and linkages which come with the tranny so my question is has there been reported yet any gt trannys giving out under the power of the 3sgte becuz i havent seen anyone with problems using it?

as long as you get a tranny that is in good shape and has not been beaten to death, you should be just fine with it. mine has never given me any problems. just make sure u put a clutch in there that can handle the power.

my gt tranny is still going fine, no problems. I don't think you have anything to worry about

then i would recommend to anyone doin the swap get the gt tranny it saves money and effort and part soucing i think only prob is the gear ratios are not preferable for top speed

I've heard many stories about peoples' S-53s and S-54s failing with their 3S-GTE swaps. Are the older S-53s weaker than the S-54?

celica3sgte has had his 5s tranny for about 2-3years now. just now he told me that he was having problems with his tranny. after closer inspection, it turned out that his tranny bolts came loose and that was the cause of the problem. so the tranny is still ok.

the mr2 tranny is the best one for a 3sgte, but the 5sfe one is ok too.

I read somewhere that the Caldina 3SGTE has VVTi... it really doesn't make a huge difference... and in the long run, having full control via camgears is better anyway. As for lift... LIFT is an n/a ONLY function. It'll make a boosted engine really irratic... and if custom building a variable lift valvetrain was easy... well... heh...

I'm pretty sure that the caldina does not have VVTi. Variable valve timing cam shafts have too much cam overlap and does not work will with forced induction. Do a internet search on cam overlap and you should find something to describe exactly what it is. If you research any engine with variable valve timing (VTEC or VVTi) that is heavily modded and using forced induction, you'll see that that they'll all have had their variable valve timing removed.

Some sources say it has VVT-i, and some don't. I don't know what to think now. >>

3S-GTE that found in the latest caldina has NO VVT-i! you can check it out on http://toyota.jp. rated power output is 191kW(260PS)/6,200r.p.m and torque 324Nm (33kgm)/4,400r.p.m.

you can find the VVT-i on 3S series on the latest toyota Altezza, which with 3S-GE BEAM Dual VVT-i, rated power is 154kW（210PS）/7,600r.p.m. and torqueis 216Nm（22kgm）/6,400r.p.m;
and the jap spec celica, which with 3S-GE intake VVT-i (red top). i don't have it output reading.
