OK the situation is I have rust on the bottom of my doors. More on the driver's side than the pass side. On the driver's side it has eaten away some of the bottom of the door >> The pass side isn't that bad, just surface. I am not one who has body work but I know some basics. Is this fixable by me or should I get a new door or have a shop fix it ?? >> ??

ne way.. the smart thing to do is get a new door to be safe, because u WILL in the long run have to fix it again if u plan on keeping your celica for a long time..

i have the same thing in the same spot, except mine goes ALL the way along the bottom of the door...

Same thing as on ALL TOYOTAS..... Toyota made a mistake i think draning the doors from water.... and myne has the same thing on the driver side door, only difference is myne rusts from inside >> My corolla has the same and all other older toyotas had this problem as i saw...

how do we prevent it from rusting?

Basicly all i did is driled few more holes in bottom of doors, to let the water run out more free... This would be the easyest way i guess.... as for fixing the rust, sand them down, and take a look in Edo's car fixing tread, day 3 of work - everything how to stop rust. And i would suggest using some of the Anti rust Wax inside of the doors, this would cover the metal more and dont let the water stay inside.

i took a file to the rust and some low grit sand paper got all the rust off and sanded down to the bare metal. by my drivers door it actually made a hole all the way through... then it was bondo time.

There are chemicals out there, one being OSFO that will treat rusted metal. You should definetly sand all the rusted areas down to bare metal. It all has to be out or it will come back. Put OSFO on it and it'll eat the rust away. Prime, Seal, and paint.

wow, great post b/c i have the same thing on my doors. its only on the inside though but it still pisses me off. i was thinking about getting 2 new doors but it looks like that wont solve the problem.

post your results if anybody tries to tackle this problem.

yeah I just looked and I have the beginning of rust on the bottom inside of my doors. definetly gonna try to take care of it before it gets any worse

When i bough my Celica 4 years ago it was even worse than yours already (perforation had begin) - I didn't want to repair this myself so I went to a good body shop that sanded all the bottom and placed a metal sheet all the way down and repainted the door (flawless).

4 years later, this patch still holds on still I can see small surface rust spots showing. My car has anti-rust oil treatment each year and i put heavy grease
on the bottom of the door. I guess its just the way it is.... winter here is horrible (salt, sand, snow ice)

I was gunna say i dont have it, but my door has been replaced from previous owner cause a nice size dent.

I have the same on my drivers side door only. MY body shop guy says to spray the liquid grease stuff into the drain holes and do that about once a year to keep water from accumulating in the cracks. Im going to start doing it on my mr2 because it hasnt started yet on it.

well to answer your quesrtion you have 2 choices. 1 you can get a new door or 2 you can fix it. if you chose nuber two all i have to say is i hope you can weld. you will have to get some exyra metal to use to do patch work sand down that part of the door take the welder and cut out the really bad rust area, as in where is is though the metal and can't be sanded off. Once the rust area is cut out you will need to weld the new metal into place to replace what was cut out. Then after the metal is replaced you need to sand/grind the metal down smooth so it matches the door and not all crapy looking once this is all done you have to prime and paint the area or the whole door if you want. Basically it all depends on what you want to do...Also in the pics it looked like the rust ate away part of your door that is what the welding and crap it for, it the rust is only on the surface of the metal and not eating though the metal yet you can sand/grind it off and then just spot paint it when your done >>
