I notice when i'm in 1st and 2nd gear, while in stop and go traffic, my GT jumps a bit every 10 or so seconds just a bit, enough to make me loose good throtle control. It only does it when the engine is barely above idle, around 1000-1700rpm.

I've also noticed that if I leave the car on for 5-10 minutes just idling, the rpm will occationally drop from a healthy 1000rpm to 700rpm for a second once every 20-30 seconds.

Any ideas on whats going on here? I think it has something to do with my sparkplug wires as when I got the car, one of the plug wires wasn't all the way connected and occationally comes slightly out of the socket, but not enough to not fire. Even after I make sure the plug is on fully, it still does the same things.

i'd just take that joint to a mechanic

mine does the same exact thing. weird.

buy new plugs they r not even 15 bucks..so do it anyways....get some new wires from ngk or some new toyota wire...check out the distributor make sure it isnt f'd up...and check ur fuel pump/filter...unplug battery for bout 10 mins and hook it back up to let the ecu reprogram

start there. replace plugs, cap, rotor, and wires. then report back to us.

You do know, with manual transmission, the throttle control is more direct. For extreme example, if you are just rolling at 3-5MPH, and suddenly, you floor the accelerator peddal, the car will bounce back and forth. I don't know if that will apply or not.. But something to think about, I guess. Otherwise, good luck. >>

mine usually idle at 700. In my case, the spark wires weren't fit snugly. It still idles at 700 but the motor is more smooth now.

You think that maybe it's the A/C compressor kicking in, that will cause the idle to increase.

I never run the A/C, so it can't be that. I'm going to spend some time tuesday hopefully and give the car a thorough look over.

Could be you have an alternator thats on its way out and when your fans kick on it lowers your RPMs.

Start cheap replace the fuel filter. Player what does the clutch have to do with anything?

1000 healthy, thats hi bro mine idles at about 700-800 constant.

I don't know if the Celica is the same but on some other vehicles the compressor runs all the time unless the switch is set to floor and dash, my 97 Sierra was that way.

I don't think the compressor runs all the time cause I really notice the difference when I do turn on the A/C.

It wouldn't make sence anyways you're dropping RPM's instead of gaining, my mistake. Like Drocay said that is high i'm at 700RPM idle also.

You're not going to believe this. While installing the modified 90-93 Accord CAI, I noticed that the temp sensor was unplugged!!! Also, while the filter was new (just changed it), the rest of the stock intake system was dirty as hell! I've only driven around less than 10 miles, but I already notice that the engine now idles right around 750 rpms and so far hasn't done any of that lunging.

I don't know if it was the fact that the sensor was unplugged or the intake was super dirty that caused it, but I really don't care now cause it works!!!
