Cost of rebuilding an engine? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #24178 27 posts Started by Drew-887
How much do you guys think it would cost to have a 95 Celica ST engine rebuilt?Im thinking about having it done. My Celica engine has 189,000 miles on it and it has most alot of its power. >frown.gif>
Rebuild kit itself is 350-400 labor is gona be the bitch.

im sure you can find a used 7afe wiht low miles for cheap.

Or you could try to swap in a 5sfe?? It would probably be the same price as a total rebuild, plus youd get more power.

that would be a totally WORTHLESS SWAP

for the same money effort as a 5sfe you could just do a 3sgte
dear lord the wacky info around here

to rebuild a 7afe
requires a great deal of work as with any motor
i think my friend just got his rebuilt for around 1k or so

If you do it your self some what cheap, if you have a shop do it, around $1200 then they'll throw in a bunch of BS and prolly get to $1500+ .. Id say just look for a low milage 7a-fe.. then just swap it out.

Would it really cost the same as a 3sgte?? I honestly didnt know that.. crazy. Is the 5sfe really that expensive?? You could just yank one out of a junk yard car and clean it up.
A good rebuild will cost you ~1k if you do it your self and have tools,
To include:
Rings, all crank/cam seals, water pump, timing belt tensioner, head gasket, getting the head milled and new valve seals at machine shop, exhaust gaskets, getting flywheel resurfaced, new clutch, all of those stupid gaskets on the intake, plugs, wires, and belts.

Dont' forget just getting lithium grease, loctite, pb blaster, gasket material, brake cleaner, antisieze, oil, brake fluid (for clutch), antifreeze, cotter pins, those stupid pins that hold the drive shafts in, and shim can run a few hundred dollars.

That's if you don't break any bolts too.
If it costs so much to rebuild why not just modify and end up with more performance gain than you will get by just rebuilding.
yea id def just get a new engine.. if i couldnt find a 3sgte for reasonable price, id settle for a 5sfe.
Yeah, just swapping my engine does sound like a good idea. I want a 5sfe engine but I have no idea how much it will cost or where I could buy one. Could someone give me prices and places where I can find 7afe and
5sfe engines?
as playr said, why would you do a 5sfe swap which would give you very little power, as opposed to a 3s-gte swap which would give you ALOT more power... and its only gonna cost a bit more.

To live, is to sufferTo survive, thats to find meaning, in the suffering....
take it easy man, the guy is new. besides I don't see you always giving correct info either

rather than a 5sfe swap, a more cost effective solution would be an A-series engine. this way you wouldn't have to change the mounts or transmission. a 4age, 4age 20v or 4agze would all be great options depending on how much money you have to spend

anyone who swaps out a 7afe for a 5sfe is a pure idiot...first of all 5sfe is 2.2liters which means it burns more gas than a 2 liter 3ste and it only put out what 135hp? so hp per liter sucks ....7afe is way more efficient considering it does 115hp 1.8l....if ur gonna switch to an s series drivetrain go with 3sge if u cant afford the 3sgte...3sge will give u at least 170hp and kills 5sfe
Hey guys look all I wanted to do was try to new engine. I'm not try to do do a big swap. I dont have that kind of money. My engine now has alot of miles on it so i want a new one. I think I might take advise from gh0st_d0g and get a A-series engine. I would still like to know how much the 5sfe would cost just in case I dont have the an A-series.
talk to bboyrugged and see how much he wants for his cuz he's doing a swap. it only has like 70k on it i think.
hello drew...

im thinking about putting a new engine in my car also.. in the next couple months...

if your willing to spend around 450 - 750 dollars... u could get a 3sge engine with 145 - 170 hp (depending on block head) .. the 3sgte would cost uy about a grand more but will give u 240 hp..

heres a link where u could buy them..

http://www.toysport.com/catalog/PET%203S-G...0Conversion.htm

as for the a seris engine.. i dont know where u could get those... but i hope this helps!

How much does it cost to have a shop do the swap for you?? Im guessing upwards of $1,000 in labor costs?
im getting a 5sfe and building it up. You can get one of those for cheap like a dime a dozen!

250 - 600 bucks depending on how many miles are on it i bet is what ur looking to pay for a 5sfe

Cruisin down the street in my Infiniti...always lookin for my next trip to Sin City
How bout save your money and drive that engine till it dont drive no more >smile.gif> 189k...i think you can make it 289... Just because you *think* its lost power doesnt mean it needs a rebuild. Do a tuneup on it. Change the plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, change all the fuilds and run some fuel system cleaner through it.

Shoot my ST has 167k and it uses Lots of oil and has preignition...im not even considering a rebuild >smile.gif> Ive driven it like this for about 20k miles now and nothing has changed...i just keep clean oil in it and bling it up!
yah toyota lasts forever

bboy

..(formerly daily driven) 3S-GTE powered celica currently set @ 12psi..
I did a tune up and its still horrible. I dont know whats wrong but my car excels alot slower than before. I cant even do a 2nd gear churp anymore. >frown.gif> I dont want to spend too much money on trying to figure out the problem. Soon I will get a diagnostic done too see what the problem is. Anyways I was thinking about getting an engine like this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=33615

I hear that I would be able to use my stock engine mounts and tranny for the 4AGE engine(Please correct me if I am wrong). All I want is an engine with more power and less miles then my current ST engine.
yes you can use the 7afe trans on the 4age if you like. i believe the 7a has better gearing then the 4a so its up to you.

also screw the 5s swap idea. some of these people amaze me with their ideas. but just so you are wondering, you will have to rewire your harness to compensate for the new ecu, change out transmissions, change the motor mount location....yada yada yada you get the point. 2-3k later you have nothing better then a hole in your wallet.

either buy a used or rebuilt 7a and just direct swap it or buy a 4a series motor and swap that. you are still looking at around 2-3k when all is done.

I recommend a "new" 7a unless your another person that thinks their car can run 12s with a built motor by spending $2,000.

hows it taste motha f*cka

yea well u have a gt so its easy to replace a 5sfe but i still dont understand the point in building up a 5sfe....3sge has WAY more potential and for 400 dollars more is way worth all the money ur paying to swap in the new engine...if u have an a series st celica its absolutely stupid to get a 5sfe cuz st people have to go through ALOT more hell to switch over to S series car....and with all the hell ur goin through it aint worth the power of a 5sfe...so get a 3sge/te if ur swapping from st a series to s....or get a 4age silver/black top if ur goin to stay with a series
umm she is rebulding a different engine.

and maybe some people just dont want to deal with the wiring and swaping issue buddy.

i dont know why everyone jumps on peoples backs and demands they do a 3s swap if they have motor problems. sh*t motha f*cka why dont you do a damn swap. heres your sign.

hows it taste motha f*cka
im am doin the swap...i just think its a waste of 3-4grand dollars to put in a 5sfe when u could put in a 3sgte for not much more
