I want to get some rims, but I don't know anything about the different sizes in rims & tires, like what will fit on my celica. From what I've read, I think I want 17's, because if I understand right, if I try to lower the car, 18's will cause problems for me. I don't know anything about tire sizes, like what the 3 numbers stand for, so what would I need? And as far as brands go for the tires, is one brand better than another?

Its not really a very simple question, as it's pretty much up to your personal taste. I think 17's are the way to go if your car looks reasonably tame...

With the tyre size's and number this is how it goes: (anyone correct me if I stuff up)
EG: 205/45/15 (This is what came standard on my Oz ZR/GT)
*205= The width of the tyre - the part of the tyre that touches the ground
*45 = The profile of the tyre - the part that is between the rim and the tread, commonly called side wall
*15 = The inner tyre circumference - this is what size rim the tyre will fit ie 15, 16, 17, 18
There is also a letter at the end and this denotes the top speed the tyres are designed for but I wouldn't worry about that too much as unless your going to be trying break land speed records. If you by off the performance rack you'll be fine.

Brands: With rims just get what you like the look of and have a good look at them take them off the stand and check for burrs and cracks in the finish, also feel for weight = it all depends on what you're prepared to pay. As with tyres, I can't go past Yokohama AS539's they are a very good tyre in both wet and dry and stick very very well.

Look I suggest you just have a look at some of the pics and see who's ride has the rims that catch your eye. If they aren't listed in their mods ask and go from there, get a list of tyres that will fit those rims from a dealer, they know what tyres fit what. Then maybe post the list with prices asking for help if you can't decide. I'm sure everybody will be happy to steer you away from the crap.

that's all good coomer, but be sure to recognize that in your example (205/45/15), the 45 that denotes the sidewall is actually a PERCENT of the first number, which denotes the width in millimeters...sooooo, that tire is 205mm wide, 45% of 205mm sidewall ~ 92.25mm sidewall, and then 15" inner circumference.

well if they're bad in the winter, they're definitely gonna suck for me, cause I get a good amount of snow here .... any other brands that are fairly good in the snow?

and if I got some 17" rims, and I drop my car 3" again, what size tires would you suggest?

i use my stock rims in the winter and the size is 205/55/ZR15. Goodyear is the brand i think that they are called ventura's or something like that but they are really good for winter. I live in IOWA and we usually get a good amount of snow here, though not so much this year, today it was like 65 degrees Farhenheit, thats 13 degrees centigrade.

About the letters in the tire size is the speed rating that it can handle like mynzeyes said. There are lots of different kinds. H,S,R, and Z. There are probably more than that. But the farther you go in the alphabet the stickier, better performing the tire is but you also lose tread life with it too. So I suggest to use you stock rims in the winter with some coilovers. Low in summer, raise it in the winter. And an added bonus if you car is high up in the winter it gives the effect of a rally car.

if I got 17 inch rims, how much do you think some decent tires would cost me? and what size tires would fit on the 17's? I guess it would be 205/something/17, right? but don't they have to be low profile tires since the rims are bigger than stock?

btw, I think my wheels right now are just 14's, cause I have an st, and I was told since I have hubcaps, they're smaller, just 14, instead of 15

40/R17's are actually a smaller diameter than the stock tires on an ST. so you can imagine how small they look in the wheel wells. personally I would not go with anything smaller then a 45 series tire. they will screw up your mileage a little bit, but they look so much better than the 40's IMHO.

you might even want to consider a 18. I am planning on a 215/40/R18 once spring comes around.
