celica handling? - 6G Celicas Forums

im drivin a 2001 model astra atm,1.8L 4 cyl, its not mine thats y im loookin 4 a car,anyway wld anyone know how the stock celi matches up to an astra regarding performance/handling etc? id imagine they wld b pretty similar but im probably wrong as i havnt test drivin a celica yet..

only way to find out is to go test drive one. the celica is very well known for its great handling

The Celica is a great handling car and there is a decent aftermarket for suspension upgrades, as far as American competition it's the best in it's class as far as Australian goes I can say it will handle better than a Monaro CV8, it's the GTO here and they handle good but run into oversteer a little to easy.

are you guys talking bout the usdm 6g or the st205?...i've drove a heavily modded civic and it doesnt comes near to the handling of my st204

I personally disagree. MacPhearson struts are not considered sporty suspension by any means. They're simple, efficient, and cheap to produce... 6th gen Celicas (US versions), are only good handling cars, IMO... but not the head of the pack. I mean, they use recycled designs from past generations, designs which may have been ok for their time, but 6th Gen Celicas have a very tough time on the track against the likes of Integras, Preludes, and even the occasional Civic. Civics, Preludes, and Integras all use front and rear wishbone suspension, which is a much more sporty suspension set-up than Macphearsons struts. The other factor of course, is the power difference, but overall, I'd say the Celica is a good handling car. It's not a badass or anything like that, but it's a good handling car. It's weight distribution is only decent too... (different sources list it between 65/35 F/R and 61/39 F/R for FWD models)...

GOod handling car, but it's no Miata.

I'm sorry, but after just selling my Prelude I have to say that the Celica is MUCH better on the track. I had a 95 Prelude and it doesn't compare to the Celica's handling. Yes it handles well, but not nearly as well as the Celica does IMO. Not to mention the Celica is about 600 pounds lighter. Yes the Celica may not have been designed to be a good handler, but for the money I think it's great.

I don't autox but on the street I didn't experienced anything that was able to keep up with me in turns. Yes, celica has very good handling abilities. Let's not compere it to NSX-like cars.

well out of all the cars i have owned the celica is the 2nd best handling of the bunch .. and it would have been frist if the audi didn't have damn near 10k of suspension mods on it.... with 4 blown sturts and a slight misalignment ... she handle great for me...

I'll tell you now the only stock Honda I can think of that will outhandle a Celica is the NSX, Prelude SH, and maybe S2000. Kwanza26 is right about the McPhearson struts though they don't do the car justice, I couldn't tell you why Toyota made a car with as much potential as a Supra and they throw in half-assed equipment (mostly USDM). I will say the Miata will outhandle a Celica but it's a roadster, run it against an S2000 or Crossfire. If you want to bring in cars outside of the Celicas class I can say the Grand Prix GTP with Comp G will smoke most American cars around corners, i've driven them and they are quick for a boat. Slap on some 17" and good rubber and I would consider the Celica track worthy for handling.

awesome thanks guys..im plannin on test driving one soon, i can get a decent celi for around $11,000 AUS one ive sold the ford wagon i shld b able to handle that on my university student budget! >biggrin.gif>

That's pretty good i'm moving to Australia in about 2 years, near Adelaide, I like the fact that the Celica is better there and cost about the same as here makes me want to go sooner.

where are you looking to find these "good" 11k celica's. Im looking for a 6gc too but the only decent ones i can find are 14k +

Expect a private sale for a 94/95 model to be that low. Any later models will probably have very high km or some sort of mechanical or aesthetic fault to warrant such a price. (Or, it really is a good deal >biggrin.gif>).
