High RPM on 5th Gear - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #25091 20 posts Started by eyohannie
I'm pretty much new to driving stick (learned a week ago), but something seems wrong when I'm crusing on the freeway on 5th gear. Is it normal for me to be getting around 3,000-3,200 RPM going around 60-65 mph? It just seems a little high compared to my now-scrapped automatic eclipse which got around mid 2,000's at those speeds.
Don't know about the GT, but it's the same way for my ST.

Now I'm loving my new 6 speed RSX-S >smile.gif> Still around 3K rpm around 60 mph...but I've got a higher redline now >smile.gif>
Its just that way celicas are. I never need to touch 4k in my civic.

DEF

I will return one day.
For me, 3700~ doing 80MPH.

hmm, 80 mph on my auto ST is like 3200 rpm.
GT for me = 4k is 80mph. i think 3k is 60 ish i dont do 60... ish often... so i dont know >smile.gif>

Well the thing is, usually autos have a lower RPM for higher speeds compared to stick, and since I have to drive on the freeway a lot, I'm worried that consistent 3k+ RPM will reduce gas mileage and/or cause increased engine wear.
I wouldnt worry about it, i get 28mpg on highway trips going 90 or above.
manual trannys are made to handle 3k RPM at 65 MPH just as auto trannys are programmed to go about 2,4k RPM at 60...

Your car will be fine...gas milage will be same if not better than auto...you will not burn out engine internals or tranny...

Basically...keep the RPMs out of th redline range...your car will be fine as it was made to operate safely and reliably at any RPM up to about 6k

Speeding is only Illegal...If you Get Caught
hahaha they wont go to the redline range stupid fuel shutoff
wow i'm still in 4th grear when doing 60 ... us ally don't shift into 6th till i hit about 75- 80mph ... but i drive every agressive ... in the city i never get out of 3rd grear...

well yea...in fourth you could actually get up to about 100 in fourth...it says the max speed per gear in the owner's manual and I believe the highest in fourth is about 100. thats relining it, tho...probably even going into redline a bit (6,5 or 7k)

MAC since when do we have 6 gears?!
hmm i think it's normal for the celi to reach 3000+ rpm when at 60.. lol... but i'm not like mac.. when i'm on local.. i shift at low rpms so to prevent my muffler from being to loud. when i'm at highways i normally shift at around 4000rpm.

80 MPH for me is around 4,300 - 4,400 RPM. The AE101 C-52 has shorter gears than the AT200 C-52.

New Toyota project coming soon...
Well, now that I currently own both an Auto and Manual 1995 GT Celicas, here are my observations:

GT Auto at 80 mph ~ 3,100 RPM
GT Manual at 80 mph - almost 4,000 RPM

So, there is nothing to worry about here with the manaul? Someone explain this. Thanks.

The redline starts at 6200 and my fuel cutoff is at 6500-6800 somewhere around there its been awhile since I tested it out.

no thats normal. manuals and autos are geared differently.

yeah, definitely nothing to worry about. The auto and manual are geared differently because the auto is technically only a 4 speed.

if you want to get the most performance, shift around 5,300~5,400 rpm as the high rpms don't provide as much power. my 94' GT is my first stick as well... and learning to drive stick on it has been a dream. You'll stall a few times, but you'll get the hang of it after a week or so.

And don't worry about the high end... i mean there is no point in going very high as it doesn't provide as much power as the power band (4k-5.3k), but i've had my car at 6.8k for a few sec and it was just fine.
