Honestly, I don't understand the complaint. I haven't had the privelage to own a 6th gen yet but I'm working on that now. I've had 4 Celicas, and they all were pretty decent. I had an 87 ST, a 92 ST, a 90 GT, and I still have my 91 All-Trac. The Trac is the fastest, but the GT held its own with a clutch weaker than Mark Prior's current pitching arm. The 87 held its own too, but G gutted that damn thing so there wasn't much weight. I'm guessing the 6th gen GT should be about even with the 5th gen, if not better. In my oppinion, the autmatic Celica is slow as dirt because you don't have full power over torque.
As far as the ST205 is concerned, >

lol.
Turbocharged AWD manual transmission is the effing shiznit. :-D.
My buddy ghetto rigged his 92 GT automatic with a turbo and it ran fine. Blew two motors, but the turbo was fine. lol.
If you got stop and go city traffic, I'd rather have an automatic anyways. Prolly why the GSX Eclipse auto sells pretty well. That, and people want performance but don't know how to drive stick. The "I take what I can get" line is bullhonkey. If you have something set in your head, go for it and don't settle for less. The juice is definitely worth the squeeze.
Thats my two psi on a lot of things... Point is, I don't see the complaint about not having fast cars. Its about torque, not power, to an extent. Power produces torque but torque doesn't produce power
