Fiberglass Hood -v.s.- CF Hood - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #26239 20 posts Started by SimmaDownNow
OK, so I was telling one of my co-workers about how I wanted to get a CF Hood for the weight reduction benefits, not for the look. He suggested that I check into getting a fiberglass hood, instead, since they are much cheaper. So my questions are: Do they even make these for our cars? What's the difference between carbon fiber and fiberglass? Any input would be appreciated.

if he's talking about the FRP hoods.. there reallyy freaking great and believe there very light, the CF is like 13lbs. compared to stock like 30 somehting.. so either way it iwll be lighter.. if u get fiber make sure its one of those top layer overlaps.. i forgot who makes it but its where the top layer on the hood overlaps instead of the bottom sticking out like most.. so much better and helps a lot
Well, your "carbon fiber" hood is really just a fiberglass hood with carbon fiber overlay.

werd. just make sure it has rolled edges.

Visit My Automotive & Tech Blog.
rolled edges? but yeah all "cf hoods" are fiberglass
a CF hood will be a touch stronger on a direct impact, but from a side impact, its the same as fiberglass.

Its a shame my CF company I'm sponsored by won't make car parts, all they do is airplane and paintball >frown.gif>

If anyone needs interior stuff, etc, I'm parting whats left of my celi out. Just ask.
if your just getting it for weight reduction go with fiberglass
^ they're the same hood... no company offers a REAL carbon fiber hood... they're all fiberglass

That is not exactly true. Few companies here make genuine CF bonnets. My 'contact' is making a CF bonnet, tailgate, guards, roof and door skins for my rally car. Only the bumpers will be fibreglass >biggrin.gif>

well your rich and crazy then now arn't you >wink.gif>

the "genuine" cf bonnet only comes from varis.....
that isn't in the states you have to remember gary we are US peeps that don't get good stuff >frown.gif>
so do they make plain fiberglass hoods for our cars or not, if you got pics then post them
You can get them custom... I got quoted about 500 for an all fiberglass model.

However, I'm still leaning towards importing the varis.

That'd be a gigantic waste of money.

price difference, weight difference, actually fits ST202, and real vents... the real thing, real grille too. all under 15 lbs

shipping was only like 120 or something, just a lot of wait..

just like projector headlights - why? because they look cool >biggrin.gif>

have any of you actually felt stuff that is REAL solid CF, not overlaid?

If anyone needs interior stuff, etc, I'm parting whats left of my celi out. Just ask.
Nope because Doggy hasn't finished the cf cooling panels
yes, i have...
have to because my classes mention how to build planes, but for now we're doing buildings.

Anyways, guy who started this...buy my CF stuff, it's a weight saver(FG w/ CF overlay) and is as cheap as anything else out there >smile.gif>.

I just might buy from you, depending on how cheap you're talking!

CF panels are pointless on a road car. They will offer nothing more than a pose factor. You will not notice any performance gain from fitting a lightweight bonnet.
Race cars are different - I'm aiming to get the weight of my Rover down to around 1000kg - couple that with 300+bhp - that will equal 300bhp per ton. Not going to acheive that with steel doors etc.
TBH, you'd be much wiser spending the $ on engine mods etc on your everyday car than getting a posers bonnet >wink.gif>
