Hey, Ive owned 2 Sixth gen Celicas in my ripe old age of 20 and heres some ideas I can share....
My first was a 94 ST w/o power locks or windows. The speaker hole appears to be 6 1/2 to 6 3/4". The problem I had with Alpine Type R 6 3/4 components is that the mounting depth is too deep to fit when the window was rolled down. So what I decided to do is cut out the speaker grilles and then drill holes for the speakers to mount to the door panels themselves...not behind them like stock. It really worked great and looked awesome.
Heres a pic from my cardomain pageHeres the whole pageMy current one is a 95 GT 5 speed (sooo much more fun >

> ) This one has power locks and windows, and the speaker size measures out to 8" with the ridicuously thick plate that is around the stock speaker. I found an actual 8" (210mm) midrange and tweeter system made by Focal. Problem is its extremely rare, Its a
210EX in the discontinued Typhon Line. If you can find it however, I highly recommend them because they have incredible bandwith and can provide bass if you do not plan on having subs. These things fit like a glove in the stock speaker bracket. The mounting holes do not line up...but because it was so extremely tight, i decided to just use some silicone sealer to hold the woofer in place. I havent gotten around to posting pics of my new car but will come soon!
The bottom line is that if you do not have power controls...the stock speaker bracket is about 6 3/4". If you do have power controls, it is closer to 8". I do not recommend putting free air subs in the front doors, because the front stage is meant to be reserved for the midrange and shimmering highs of tweeters, not bass. If you cant come up w/ a 8" midrange, then look at the "how to" on making a bracket adapter to go from 8 to 6 3/4. Hope these ideas can help you all out
