Tire profiles - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #26525 9 posts Started by SimmaDownNow
OK, so right now I have some 17" wheels with tires size 215 40R 17 83W. Soon I will be upgrading to 18" wheels and I want to get tires with either the same profile tire, or a higher profile. I DO NOT like low profile tires (neither the look, nor the diminished cornering ability appeals to me). So, I want to know whats the highest profile tire that I can put on the 18s safely, so I can keep my cornering ability and that won't rub on my wheel well. . Also, extra credit to anyone who can break down and explain all the different numbers in the tire size ratings (which numbers correspond to width, height, etc...). I used to know all this, but I always forget it when the time comes to get new tires... All input will be appreciated!

215 is width 40 is height 17 is size 83w is a speed rating

my choice for 18s would be 225-40-18.

You have low profile tires right now. And with 18 inch rims you are only gonna get low profile. Also the lower the profile, the better the cornering. If u dont like low profile, go with 15s.
When I say I don't like "low profile", what I meant was that I don't like REALLY low profile tires. You know, like the ones that come on 20s and sh*t like that. I understand that I have low pros now, and I don't mind them , but I just don't want to go any lower. Thanks for the info guys!!!

225/40/18 is a good set up, I changed to these from 215/35/18. The sidewall now protects the wheel as it should and no holes can damage the rim of wheel, the ride is more comfortable now too
I have 215/35/18s and i HATE them, would never go that low again.

225/40 on 18s? Holy crap is your speedo out of whack, and your acceleration must have really gone in the toilet. That's almost two inches greater in diametre than stock.
18's with 35mm sidewall are the same as stock 15's with 55 sidewall. So the 40 would screw up the speedo yes but not as much as you think.

The speedo isn't affected that badly, the police havent done me for speeding, I still go by what it says on the dash. The acceleration is as good as it was before and that extra 5mm on the wall makes it corner son much quicker as there is more tread left on the tarmack when the tire stretches. I will never go back to 35's they destroyed my alloys
