quote for custom piping - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #27448 25 posts Started by chicklover345
I got a quote to do custom piping for my car. it was from the exhaust manifold to the muffler w/ 2.25" piping and a resonator. the quote was about $600. does that seem right or is that a bad price, because i've seen complete cat back systems for like $500.

what system did u get? was it a kit or was it custom made?

My car = 0-60 in ~9secIt's slow, I know
^^ thats custom, what are you having done? mandrel bends with what stainless steel pipes?

it should be no more than 300 installed with your muffler and mandrel bends. go somewhere else and get a quote.

hows it taste motha f*cka
No more than 300 for a full exhaust mandrel and stainless, what world do you live on?

I got quoted 700 for full exhaust, and IMO that was a bit high so im getting a second opinion soon. But saying no more than 300 thats naive. It costs money to have custom stuff.

If your going stainless & mandrel, 5-600 is what your going to be looking at. I've seen ppl get it done for much cheaper, but no place around here will do it that cheap.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
yeah, most places use aluminized steal and sometimes, compression bends for the 300$ price. mandrel and stainless will cost you more just because of how much the bends cost.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
in order to get the bends you need a pipe bender does it have to be a certain one because I can go to a hardware store and get one would it be enough or is it not the right kind. Pipe Bender

I get mine done for $100 for crush bent from the flex pipe back with muffler installed.

Jared Harwell
i got a quote from a different place from the flex pipe back w/ the cat w/out the muffler for about $130. do we need a cat to pass emissions or will eliminating it still make it passable i know its diff in all states but generally not in california will it still pass w/out the cat

The quote I got for full stainless and madrel bent was $600 w/o muffler.

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
No they cant give you a catless system unless you pay cash, if you get my drift.

Also, a mandrel bender is very expensive. You can buy a crush bent pretty cheap, but then you have small bends so its a small exhaust. A 3'' mandrel bender is about $100,000.

so i would just have to get that cat replacement part made by some member here I saw it but i cant remember who it was. any help on that. also if i did get that would it pass emissions or no?

Hey Super, i got my exhaust installed at Paul's Motors in Poughkeepsie. I had my own muffler and they custom bent 2 1/4 inch piping from the cat-back and installed my muffler with it and everythign for like $200.
i hade mine mandrel bend with stainless steel pipes with a HKS HIPPER 5INCH TIP..with 3inch piping...........got the exhaust tip for $50 from a supra turbo... the shop is located in cali >biggrin.gif>.... and seriouly cost no more then $100...plus the guy did a great job on it.............

so what would fit better under our cars an oval muff or a round one and also how long body, how long/diameter tips, and if round what diameter. and also double or single tip. what size piping should i use for a custom cat-back exhaust

Yeah...you got 1/2 an exhaust crush bent and small piping...thats about right. I'm talking about a full exhaust, 3'', mandrel bends, totally different.

Hipper is Hi-Power? No more than $100 is the most ludicrous thing i've heard in a long time. 1 45 degree mandrel bend costs almost $50. And one hour of work is between 55 and 65 dollars so thats already more than 100 and all he did was buy a part and hold it in his hand for an hour.

First ask yourself what you want. Stock muffler is big, so anything is going to fit. Do you want loud, or not. Do you want it rust resistant piping or no. Do you want the look of a double tip or no.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
i want to be able to hear it but i don't want it to be extremely loud and i was wondering does the length and diameter of the tip make a difference in sound and the same with a double tip any sound difference??

My car = 0-60 in ~9secIt's slow, I know
if you want a round muffler make sure the body of it is longer then 14"s...........like 20" long is good (that will help keep it quiet and low tone)

tip....don't go bigger then 3.5" tip any bigger is excessive and becoming a folgers coffee can...............

resonator...you need one a tubular style resonator with a perforated wall is best cause it doesn't disturb the air flow very much and keeps the noise down
your piping i wouldn't suggest any larger then 2.25"
and yes you want to keep your cat it does little for your performance these days cause the way they are designed it doesn't disturb flow much so by ditching it you might gain .01 hp....just keep it.
I asked what kind of piping they use for the cat-back at the place that was $130 they said they only do aluminized piping. will that rust? and if so how long does it take before it does rust. (i have snowy winters!) (and hot summers)

so i finally bought it My exhaust i got it for $131.33 and free shipping from Hott Exhaust what do you guys think of it. anybody heard it on a celi?

I cant wait for it to get here i hope it comes by friday but it might get here next monday >frown.gif>

I've seen it on a fifth-gen and it looked good -- guy was very happy with it.

However, I'd point out you have just a muffler. The stock system had a muffler, resonator and cat.

One comment -- a resonator is not a muffler, despite the way people like to confuse the terms. A resonator is a hollow chamber designed to bounce (resonate) soundwaves so they cancel each other out. A muffler such as has been described by Playr is a straight-through design, but it's a muffler (sound absorbtion) not a resonator. A resonator dings like a bell when tapped, while a muffler makes a dull thud.

Our cars came with a resonator. Given you're replacing a baffled but quiet muffler with straight-through design, it'd be a good idea to replace it with something significant.

His point about length is an excellent one, however. It won't affect flow but it will smooth out the sound. You'd be looking for an XL Powerpack or a MagnaPack. Hottexhaust and fle-online were very good about finding these parts, which are somewhat rare.
Dam the Price in the U.S is cheep.....

I had the turbo dump pipe, high flow cat, 2.5" mandrel pipe and twin HKS cannons all custom made for $1400(AU$)..... >frown.gif>

312whp with more to come....
jezus man. I paid $450 CND for 2.5 inch mandrel bent from the flex pipe back in full stainless, preformance stainless resignator with me providing the muffler. My supra's exhaust was stupidly expensive. I paid $560 for steel(not even stainless) and just cut and welded pipes(no bends) with a crappy dyno max muffler and a magnaflow tip.
I'm getting it installed tomorrow at 8am i will post some sound clips as soon as i get them. im getting 2.25" piping cat-back onto my magnaflow. i hope it sounds good.
