just thought id see if anybody on here has attempted or would be interested in trying to convert their celi to an electric car. our car would be perfect for a electric conversion because of its light weight. i think it would be cool just because it would be unique and all the extra money youd save on gas, oil, repairs/replacements, etc. plus, electric motors have a lot of benefits over gas engines: they produce maximum torque at zero rpm, deliver their peak power over broad rpm range (in other words a 100hp rated em would beat a 100hp rated ice), only one moving part, no shifting needed, can be surged with current to produce many times their rated power for limited time, can use regen braking to help save energy and decrease load on brakes, etc. anyways just thought id throw it out there. theres a lot of tuner potential, and with li-ion batterys and integration of a ultracapacitor pack would make it pretty damn fast, not to mention the sexiest ev on the road >>. heres a few sites

Converting the celica to electric wouldnt be worth it economically. You would prolly be better just buyin the electric car / hybrid in the first place?

wheres the fun in that? >> if you are talking about overall cost, an electric swap is comparable to say a 3sgte swap, and it would seem to be easier in my opinion (lot less wiring to deal with the lack of o2/knock/map...sensors and you no longer need the ecu, only issues are custom mounts, vacuum pump, and few other things). plus i dont know of any evs out there to buy at a reasonable price, have good performance, and good looks. if you did this as a project car and not a daily driver, it would be fun to turn it into an electric dragster with no batteries just a ultracapacitor pack.

and all this would get you a car that might be able to do 0 - 60 in 20 seconds? For the money of a 3sgte swap, I'd rather have the 3sgte, but its your car. >>

im not saying i want to do it, this is my only car. just thought itd be a fun project for someone, and you could easily break 10 seconds at least if it was designed right. i agree with you id go with the 3sgte if i had the money and the tools to install it!

There is an electric car that can beat a viper v12 in the 1/4 mile. I will see if i can find the link again.

^ there not gana save you much on gas, hybrids only get milage in the 30's thats not good.

I think that if the gas runs out I would much rather convert my celica to electric then by an electric, just because the electric cars I have seen look way to alian, I dont know why they cant make one look like a car.

If have heard of collage students (for a school project) have got regular motors to get up to 100 miles per gallon, although they have lost a lot of hp, still thats pretty incredible, I'll hunt down the link. there is just so much money in the gas market that I think the major car companies are to scared to give them the finger by building and selling a better car.


I look forward to seeing the crash test with that one, you would get so owned if a f350 hit you head on.

^ exactly creis, i still dont understand why people discount electric cars, they dont have to be oversized golf carts, most older electric vehicles were slow because they had lead acid battery packs and they werent developed to be fast. again, i think the development of ultracapacitors is a huge advancement because of their superior power density over batteries. used in conjunction with lightweight, energy dense li-ion batteries, there is a lot of potental.

this car was never sold but was leased, it had decent range and speed. if companies put more resources into developing evs, theres no reason they couldnt perform great and look nice. the auto industry depends on maintainence of gas engines (replacing oil, plugs, air filters,etc.).

my dad was actually throwing the idea of buying a 1st gen miata for dirt cheap and converting to electric. You wouldnt even need a very powerful motor to get a miata up to speed. Hes not too much into cars or speed, just the technology.

that is a picture of the unfinished car, pic just shows hooking up the new lithium polymer battery cells. that is removable "bundling tape" used to help secure wires, battery packs, etc during installation. at 364$ per battery cell x 56 cells = 20,384$ just in batteries alone!, not to mention the 2 motors, 2 controllers, custom roll cage, data aquistion systems, new struts and springs etc. this is hardly a hicks ev >>. look through the work history.
